Hi folks,
I am looking to locate the engine serial/vin code on my 1.9 litre 85 westy? Where abouts is it? I kinda want to see if it is the original engine.
Thanks, Joe

Just to the left of the alternator mounting , stamped on the block .

But how do you connect the engine case number to the VIN number? Is that info in the VIN number? What about "M" codes? Did they still use them by the 80's?

It appears that there is no relation btween the VIN # and the engine number except that the VIN # states the engine type .
Reading the VIN # is as follows
1st....indicates the country of origin..W= Germany
2nd...Manufacturer...V= Volkswagen
3rd...Vehicle type
4th...restraint ...R=hydraulic brakes
5th...Car line
6th...Series
7th...Body style
8th...Engine
9th...Check digit
10th..Model year 80-89= A-K
90-99= L-X
11th..Assembly plant
12-17th ..Assembly line sequence # ie. the vehicle fingerprint .
(nb)..The letters I , O and Q are never used in the VIN sequence
The engine number can also be read and from memory will show the place of manufacture and date of manufacture amongst other things .
PLEASE do not use the above info as strictly factual . I have only done light research but if willing you can take it further .

I have also heard that if you write to VW Germany with your VIN # , you get info back that includes the original engine # :)
