I just purchased an 87 weekender poptop. I've owned an RV before and am familar with how those auxilery batteries work but I'm not sure about this vanagon set-up. It appears that the auxilery battery is under the drivers seat. Does it really only power the one light above the table? Seems odd but oh well. Does it charge up while the vehicle is running like the main battery does? I want to make sure it is completely charged before my first camping trip next weekend. I was going to attach my trickle charger to it if it doesn't charge up on its own. Should the battery be disconnected while on the charger? Any tips on making the best use of the extra power? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Well your kind of on your own on this one. VW provided the space for the battery, but never connected one, neither did Westfailia, so it was up to the owner to do this.
The way your battery is hooked up, and what it is powering was determined by the person who hooked it up. So your going to have to be a bit of a detective on this one, ask the PO if they are available, look at any old recipts that may have came with it, and if all else fails start tracing wires.
I don't know if this will help, maybe give you an idea of what to look for.

I have an 85 Weekender and it came with the factory auxillary battery..
Mine only operates the refrigerator, although i have a power inverter connected to the battery for other accesories.
The alternator charges the aux battery while driving. along with the starting battery....although they run on seperate circuits. The aux is strictly for the 'fridge....
