View original topic: Distributor clutch pin

I am trying to take apart my distributor in the 91 Syncro, and it looks like it should be real simple. There is a pin that goes through the clutch on the bottom, and its held in by a simple spring that wraps around it. I figured take the spring off, and the pin should fairly fall out. Nope. That pin is in there. I have tried using a punch and a hammer, to no avail. And I can't think of a good way to press it out. Any ideas?

I had the exact same problem with my 87. Eventually I gave up and went down to the local shop where they pressed it out for free. Of course, I don't know how they did it, sorry. :?

If you have them, which I don't, you could try a bench vise, a punch, and a 2x4 with a hole to recieve the pin.

Thanks Hal. The 2x4 with a hole in it might be the idea I have been looking for. If not, I'll hit my local machine shop.

I helped a guy press that pin out in the past, but not before he mamgled some parts (we fabricated a screw press). Anyway, i remember hearing afterwards that the pin had a slight taper to it and only goes in one way. I can't confirm this, just passing along hear-say.

A little bit of heat is all it took. I was worried about heating and damaging the plastic washer the bently says is in there (there wasn't). So I directed the heat on the very bottom of the shaft for about 15 seconds, and then bang bang with a hammer and punch, and it slowly made its way out.

I had to bang the new one in as well. And as far as I could tell there was no taper to the pin...
