Where is it on the transmission? Can I check/change it with transmission mounted?

Bentley isn't really clear on the Syncro. It is NOT the switch by the vacuum diff lock. Trace the other wires going to the trans and you'll find it, a two prong plug that looks a little like an oil sender. I believe it should be on the driver's side front of the trans, near the mount, but on the SIDE of the trans. You shouldn't have to remove the trans to change it.
Bet you find a disconnected or broken wire.

Yeah, the vanagon version of the Bentley isn't clear on a lot of things as compared to the other one I have for my a2 Jetta. I peered around a bit earlier and didn't see any wires. A broken or disconnected wire? I couldn't be so lucky. Thanks, I'll look again. Maybe even put it up on ramps this time.

The last time you asked, I answered: "Isn't the reverse switch screwed into the shift shaft cover? Left side of the trans, directly opposite the shift control lever."

Yes, I appreciate your first answer but you didn't seem to certain. I just wanted a second opinion and to ask it in a fresh topic where more people would see it instead of hijacking another thread.

OK, found it. Drivers side, 5 inches forward of axle.
Wire was corroded due to torn boot. Repaired. Still no light when shifting into reverse. I got it to work intermittently by pushing and pulling on the shift linkage.
I thought maybe the switch had lost its sensitivity but it activates the lights with very little movement when out. I had this problem on my 16v jetta. I removed the crush washer, tefloned it, and it worked fine.
Opinions? Sensor bad? Something worn in the transmision that activates the switch?

Sounds like possibly the switch is worn at the contact point or the linkage in the trans isn't moving quite far enough.

Switch looked good at contact point. Nice round taper.
