Did a search... no luck

When I step on the gas, my pedal doesn't want to come back up. When I pull on the accelorator cable in the engine bay, everything returns to normal. When I use the gas pedal, It won't return unless i hook my foot under it and pull it up. Makes for some interesting choreography while driving.

It's been raining here (yeah! about freakin' time) so I haven't been able to get under the splash pan to check things out. Trying to get ideas of what to look for.

This is on the '78 Westy. 2.0L FI solid lifters.

my 72 does the same thing and i havent had a chance to look at it... i thought it was just the carb sticking but that doesnt make any sense... my 78 i looked under the splash pan as the pedal is down on the floor and its not getting any gas and everything looks normal... so if you get down there if you would... take some pics so i can see what its supposed to look like... maybe i am missing something?

Your accelorator cable is probably failing. This is typical behavior for a cable that has a few broken strands of cable, the broken strands hang up in the housing and cause it to stick.

However... I am having the same problem with a brand new accelerator cable. I haven't had a chance to look very closely, but I think I need to replace the worn pedals pivot/pin/spring.

There is a spring on the pedal rotation shaft itself, it is probably broken.

It connects from the shaft to the pedal.

look under catagory levers-pedal cluster select accelerator pedal

A key to those diagrams would be helpful.

Curse you internet!!! So full of info yet so far away!!!

Perhaps somewhere in ratwell's microfiche, perhaps?

A picture is worth a thousand words right?
The spring can be had here.

THATS AWESOME THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!

westy78 Tue Jul 05, 2005 6:12 pm

To help with the sticking, punch the pin out that holds the pedal to the hinge and give it a good cleaning and lube. Then clean the hinge area under the bus and give a little squirt of grease down the tube where the accelerator cable comes through the firewall in the engine bay. She should be smooth as a whistle then.

Westy 78, nice picture taking! Now I KNOW that you didn't squeeze your head back there to line up the last shot.

'Preciate the pics.

Side note. My '78 Euro DC with the upright 1600 did not have that sping, yet it pops back nice and tight.

I usually add my own return spring for the pedal...right on that swivel mechanism behind the 'skid plate'. You may have to try afew different size/tension springs and angles, so that there is equilibrium with the throttle spring as well...but it is worth the time - nothing like a springy, yet well-balanced pedal !

daves_ale Thu Jul 07, 2005 9:18 pm

Removed the carpet and some foam for sound-deadening from my front floor. My spring is attached to my pedal like it should be. Part of hte hinge pin is out and needs to be banged back in.

I noticed that my '78 DC has some play in the pedal before (let's call it flop) it starts to move the cable.

Should there be some play and if so how much?

I don't know if there is suppose to be any play before the pedal moves the cable but I don't think there is any in mine that I remember. I like an instant throttle response. You may want to adjust your throttle cable slack at the clamp on the carb linkage. I'm assuming it's an upright with carb seeing as it's a Euro?

daves_ale Fri Jul 08, 2005 6:31 am

The reason that I asked about slack is that I'm still having issues with my gas pedal in my Westy.

daves_ale Sat Jul 09, 2005 10:41 am

Problem solved.

Pulld off the splash pan and found that my cable had been bound up through the thingie that it conects to. So I unbound it and then adjusted the cable at throttle body. My pedal has a small (< 1/4") of play. It accelarates and fine and when I let off the pedal, everything goes back to idle like it should. It's nice when things work properly.
