Has anyone converted thier Vanagon to a carb? If so what did it do to your preformance/fuel economy/ ext. What size was used? Thanks.

I've never seen a kit or anything, just was never designed to have a carb.
I would just stick with the FI.

I've heard of people doing this but have never personally seen one. I've got an 84 Vanagon that had SERIOUS problems with the FI system when I bought it. I've never worked on or understood FI before but I forced myself to sit down, read the manual, do some research on the web (asked tons of questions on this site) and VERY methodically went through my system. Was it painful? Yeah, a bit. And it took me some time to get it all sorted out. Now I really understand the system and feel that I can troubleshoot it fairly well and it does run better, with more power and better fuel economy than any VW (bus) I've owned.

Thanks to the guys here and my Bentley manual I'm able to troubleshoot and repair just about anything on my 82 Westy. Most everything on my bus can be checked out with a test light and a volt ohm meter. It does take some getting used to but believe me after you've spent time with the FI you'll never want to go back!

There is a Bosch manual on FI you can buy too. It helped me understand a lot too.

The other thing that helps a lot is to go through things slowly and methodically. Eventually, you will get it. It may even envolve a series of things to fix.

I will start doing it myself soon too. Automatic Westy runs OK, warm. Economy is so-so, it seems. Like around 11 mpg. I have two minor issues. (With my car, that is. We'll leave the obvious mental issues aside for now.)

85 digijet:
1. Nasty stumble if you accelerate when cold. (sensor, thinking it is warm?)
2. Idle climbs to 1200-1800 if you put it in neutral after like sitting at 900 for 10 seconds. Sometime "blipping" the throttle brings it back down, but not so frequently anymore. Emmm?

We'll see, I guess.
