Well,

I guess the aircooled models won't have a temp gauge...

I think '85 and earlier will back date. I just put a '85 cluster in my '84 because I wanted the tach. The info I needed was in the Bentley. The main plug is called the "T14". All but one wire had to change places, ther are a few empties also. The T14 plug snaps open/shut. You just move wires to the location you need them in.

The gas gauge troubleshoot may be in the Bentley as well. All of mine work so I dont need to know...yet.

Buspor has it. The tach will work if you have a sensor and a wire in the harness already (dunno 'bout diesel setup). If not, sensors can be purchased from most gauge suppliers as lots of diesels weren't equipped with them. Then you just run a wire to the front and insert in the proper spot on the T14.

Put an '85 tach in my '84. Had to use the '85 mylar and swap wires in the T14 but all worked well ('85 cluster in worse condition than the '84). Oh, also reconfigured the "idiot" lights and cut a hole for the clock (what a waste... doesn't work!). Ran a wire from the coil to the T14... obviously no coil on the diesel but same general idea once you acquire a sensor.

Mike!

I found that chip on the back but only the two outer prongs are used. but I found a burnt resister on the back. The book says it is a 150oms (R14)
Some of the board is burnt to. I am going to get it running and stoping then I will deal with the fuel. Does anyone about how much the deisel get a tank full.

Can I swap an 89 dash pod into an 85 without any changes or mods?

My 89 is setup for cruise and I want to slowly put all the 89 stuff into our 85. My 85 is a VERY early 85, tough with the earlier style wiring with the stuipid ancient (non blede) fuses.

Any hints or thoughts or ideas?

How come I didnt read that the first time? That changes things. I know some other makes with diesels have tachs, just dont know how they are triggered.

r39o, not sure about the swapability of '89s. Things get tough the more wire you switch around. I've robbed l.e.d.s from a cluster from a A2 16v I used to have for my vanagon. I wanted to use the 140 mph speedo, but the gearing was off. Vanogon is like "803" and the A2 was "15XX". I drove it for a day and never got over 40 mph

Some times you just have to try things to see what happens.

I don't like letting all the smoke out of the parts. I never seem to be able to put it back in.
