Getting this car for 500 dollars. Here is link to my web page with 19 pictures of inside and outside of car. It's been sitting for about 7 years; no rust inside on floor pans, no rust in front, no rust in engine area, German Engine has less that 10K on it, no bumpers, glass and all rubber looks good, need rear fenders really, brakes are probably bad, and front end supposedly shakes when driving. The whole thing will need body work and painting although at one time it had 2 coats of clear on it, which is crumbling. There's one bad rust whole above the right-rear fender, plus the rear fenders need replacig too.. The car looks like it has the original tar boards in it. Here is the URL, TELL ME what you think. This may be a 74 super beetle, not a 73.

I just got a 73 Super Beetle today. It has a little rust on it,faded paint, fenders are good. I need to find a better hood. I paid $100 down and still owe $200. It has a "AE" motor in it,hopefully the motor runs.I plan on putting the motor in a 70 baja bug that I will be buying soon. I had to save it,otherwise the lady that owns it was going to junk it. I just parted out a 70 bug for my long dunebuggy project.
My vw addiction is a bad habit, but I love vw's. My daughter wants a 71 Super Beetle vert.
I will be taking pics of my 73 Super next week.
Please recycle,save all vw's

Are you going to post some pictures of your 73? Looks like you may have got really good deal at that price!...I have a 74 Sun Bug completely restored and getting this one just to mess around with. Got a 69 ghia in paint and body shop. Pics of it are on same web site. Have a goodun!

thats not a 73, if it is then it has the wrong fenders, 73's don't have bumper shocks, looks to be a 74

I agree with everyone about the shock-absorbing bumper mounts being from a later model made after 1973 but who cares if it's only 500 bucks?

The rusting in the rear quarter is cancerous. This is caused by moisture being trapped inside the body from that crescent moon vent behind the rear windows. Unforunately by the 70's VW figured out they could use injected foam inside the cabin for some sound deadening and to close-up the hole between there and the engine bay (over the rear fenders from inside the engine bay to the rear of the cabin).
This injected foam is a rust-catcher deluxe and causes this panel to rott. Seeing it on one side means the other side is very close to the same (usually) but given some of the pics I've seen of your Ghia, this should not present much of a problem for you :D

Your Ghia is lookin' good man. :)

your rust problem looks like mine on my 74. ill bet ya a cold one when you remove the fenders, there will be some through holes under it as well. luckily i have a 72 sb with solid metal i can "borrow" from...sharp car man and WELL worth the 5 hun, good deal!

Easy to find out. Look at the tag on the inside driver door if it says 9/73 or higher its a 74.
I had a super beetle that was made in 9/70 and it was a 71 .

Doubledd,

Before you think about starting that engine, I would recommend taking the engine out and making sure that the cooling tin, the head and piston fins are all free of mouse-housing and general debris. I'm not sure how long the engine in my 77 ran, but one of the the heads was cracked and fused to the piston jugs. And my car only had 36K on it.

That's a very good idea on removing the engine, so the Engine will be removed and gone over good by my mechanic down at the bug barn. Also, I'm going to have him look at brakes, front end, etc. The cv axels will be removed and repacked too. Thank you guys for looking at the car. I will keep you posted as to what else I'll be doing to it over time.
