| is there a cot/bunk available for a 69 westfalia that can sleep an adult or is there only a childs cot? If so is there anywhere I could get a new one? |

| I have a childs cot, with bars, in excellent condition and a good upper cot from a 69. The upper one needs new canvas but the frame is great. P.M. me if you are interested. I am in N.E. Florida. |

Yes, there is a single person cot mounted to the roof of a pop top Westy.
A new complete cot? None that I know of. Dawn at PLF makes new cot canvas for them, but you need to supply the frame. There are 3 different versions of the 68-72 upper cot, depending on the amount of screw holes in the outer roof. The 73 is one-year-only and will not fit at all.
Here is a page from the owners manual showing it:

I think that child's cot is only for a kid up to 100LBs. Besides, it's pretty short! I have the '73 cot. Not all that comfortable as I recall and it robs you of "walking around" room. I think mine will stay in the basement.
Does the '69 have a full-sized pop top? I think so. Look around, maybe on type2.com. Somebody retro-fitted the full bed from the later vans and posted instructions. That makes more sense to me. |

| does anyone have a pic of the 73 cot and the length between fixings? i've got a 73 but the cot was missing-the one I managed to source seems too short so was the roof cut slightly differently on the 73? I guess I've got an earlier cot here, which is a bit of a nuisance considering how long it took me to find one! |

Somewhere I have pics. I'll try to find them for you but it sounds like you're talking about the adult cot that screws into the roof and goes along the side of the "pop top" opening.
You should have threaded holes in the roof if your van came with that cot originally.
The child's cot attaches between the "A & B" pillars.
Tell us which you mean and I'll measure up. |

Both the child's cot that goes across the front seats and the cot in the roof of a 68-73 Westfalia camper are for CHILDREN and rated for no more than 80 pounds when they were new. There is no such thing as an adult cot for an early camper. |

I beg to differ. The '73 cot is clearly for an adult.
I THINK it's a one year only thing. |

In what way is it for an adult? The only differenc e between the '73 cot and the 68-72 is the way it unfolds and the way it mounts. It's the same canvas used on every other cot. The '73 cot is definitely one year only, but that doesn't make it suitable for an adult. Here ya go, direct from the 1973 Westfalia owner's manual...notice where it says "The child using the cot....." I did mis speak though, the 1973 cot is rated for 150 pounds max when it was new and the child's cot across the front seat for 90 pounds.

Well now I'm wondering myself.
I looked on this site and saw this: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/73busbrochure7.jpg which calls it the "3rd child's cot, but I'm sure we've discussed this in the past and it was said to be good for a fair-sized adult.
I'm not giant but I can sleep in it (on the original canvas) and the last time I did I was a bit over 170. The bed's much better though and sleeps two.
This is the first time I've seen anything referring to it as a cot for a kid.
Live and learn I guess. Room for one tall kid... |

| Seems like you could run webbing or straps under a child cot to add extra support. Back before I got my bus, I had an idea of making a platform suspended from chains that hooked to the roof opening lips. Basically just a variant on the continental idea, I guess. |

Looks like I've got the answer now - the 73 opening is bigger which is why the roof cot that I've got is too short. That'll make it even harder to track one down. By the look of it the 73 cot had a longer mounting bracket (about 18 inches?) at the end towards the rear of the camper.
Thanks to everyone for posting replies - I'm going to have a go at making a drop down roof bed I think. Much more comfortable and more room to move around as well. |
