The Bentley manual does a good job of explaining this, but maybe you do not have one to follow the wiring diagram. Basically, the shifter wire, the one that goes to the shifter, is a ground wire and grounds the solenoid in the engine compartment , located to the left of the engine. The other terminal on the solenoid, in the engine compartment, goes to an inline 8 amp. fuse, which then connects to the positive side of terminal 15, on the coil.

On the trans, one of the switches has only one terminal. That one is a neutral switch. Maybe, it has two terminals. Anyway, try leaving off the wires or conect them together, with a jumper wire, bypassing the switch. There is also a reverse light switch. You can leave that one disconnected and it will not affect the trans working. Some do have a switch for starting the car only in neutral or park and that is a one terminal switch. They also used that on many of the newer std. ( manual) transmissions, with the seat belt interlock system. So, some of the wires or switches may be found in the seat belt interlock wiring diagram. And, you can pull that wire off the switch and disable it , also. I usually made a jumper wire for the two prong switch connector and disable the neutral safety or seat belt interlock system.

The most important one is the wire to the shifter and to the electric solenoid. Those must be hooked up correctly and working. Hope this did not confuse you more. ---George4888

Hiya Corolla,

Here's a well-meant piece of advice....................

Point your browser at Amazon.com. When you get there type Volkswagen, Bentley, Service into their search feature. Look for the manual with the orange cover.

This will be the Bentley VW Service manual for your car. It has an entire section devoted to the servicing and maintenance of the AutoStick transmission. It also has detailed wiring schematics. You need that manual now. It will answer most all of the questions you have already asked. And you will find it useful in the future. If that weren't enough, Amazon has just about the best price on this manual that you will find.

If you need, I can take a snap of my control valve so you can see the wire colors and match it to yours.
