'88 2.1... looking at the front of the engine, #2 cylinder area small fitting coming off the upper part of the head. The hose has to come off to replace the power steering belt. Small dia hose (pressure relief?) Anyway, is there a source for that fitting? All I didi was take the hose loose from the plastic tubing side, not the block, to change out the PS belt. I took it loose, walked away to get something, comeback and its gushing water at that fitting. The fitting itself was totally rotted and just crumbled with minor movement. I thing it was due to some PO using the wrong sized rubber hose as it was just run of the mill 5/16' parts store style an it was in bad shape as well.
The other problem is that I already snapped the head of the top allenbolt holding it on! The bottom feels like its not going to come out withough breakage either!
As I am typing I am coming up with a half assed repair if the part is not avail; tap out the fitting for an NPT and put a barbed fitting on. Since I didn't break the seal loose, I could run a bead with my welder from the broken stud to the fitting and worry about it when I have to do heads etc.. at a later date. Sound doable? This of course would only be doable if there is enough clean metal to work with left on that fitting, as it looks pretty rough.
I just looked at gowesty and bus depot and could not find the part, but I also am not sure what you call it.
Ideas, thoughts?

Not sure of the name of that part, I went out to my extra power unit, 2.1 long block in the garage, then looked at my 88 Carat...
right above the exhaust on the head is a flat fitting, which has 2 10mm bolts on it. Coming out of the middle is a gas line sized hose which hose clamps to that flat fitting then goes up towards the licence plate then attaches to a metal tube which then runs to the water bottle RIGHT?
try www.volkscafe.com see if he can pop that item, if not, let me know, I can remove the one I have off of the core and mail it to you....

Thanks weiner, for this post and the PM.
for anyone else that cares I did rig it yesterday (between "squall" rain bands from Hurricane Dennis) like I was talking about in my first post. I removed the PS pump and and also took loose the PS pump reservoir and moved it out of my way. Got in there with a right angle drill, drilled and tapped for a 1/8 NPT and installed a 5/16" nipple fitting. I also did run a tack from the broken stud meat to the fitting itself in hope to keep it sitting tight on the oring. It seems to be working, for the time being. I took it out and ran it pretty hard afterward, vanagons handle high wind gusts WAY better than there older counterparts!
Tool tip of the day; I DON'T reccomend the Makita rechargable right angle drill if your ever in the market for one. It pops its overload way too easy! I had been wanting a right angle but I woun't buy until the need arises. Unfortunatly the winds/rain were a litle too severe for me to make the run up to Sarasota in the baja to hit Harbour Freight, just hitting the Home Depot 7 miles away was a hell ride! The Makita was about the only thing avail without dropping 150+ clams. I wanted an air powered drill, I think I might box it back up and return it as I am not the least bit impressed, except for its size! And I'll need to use it again as weiner found me the right replacement part and I'm gonna have to deal with those broken studs again :( |
