I need to replace my power steering hoses and I noticed a sensor attached to the base of the high pressure hose fitting at the P/S pump. What is it and is it really necessary? I have the feeling that finding the replacement fitting with an inlet for the sensor will be difficult.

That is an idle kick switch. disconnect it and turn the wheel, listen to the engine stumble, you need it.

If its the flexible hoses that are leaking, you can have them repaired at a hydraulic hose shop. Some owners were able to find a shop that has metric fittings and hose for a OE look. My local shop does not. What they do to repair is cut off the old hose, weld on sae connectors to the metric pipes and make a hose to fit between. That keeps the pressure switch in place.
