Unless you have the original to work from, fabricating them yourself would be a difficult and risky endeavor. I'd recommend searching the junkyards, or buying new ones.

If your friend has the proper tins, maybe you could use them to template new ones.

There are several pieces on a VW engine. I can think of 13-15 parts off the top of my head!

Search these forums, i'm sure there are pics and description of each component and it's function.

Good luck!

do those tins under there make a diff. on how cool the motor runs?

They will make a difference on cooling. It keeps the flow of air fully across the cylinders. It also makes hot air exit the engine area where the engineers originally planned. They also serve to keep some of the road dirt from getting stuck to the cooling fins which over time can cause cooling issues. The Volkswagen engineers knew what they were doing. I have been working with VW engines for more than 25 years and have not seen any real cooling improvements over the stock engine tin.

The bottom 3 tins also protect your pushrod tubes from rocks and debris that can puncture them.
