Hi Mike,
The reserve is in the one and only gas/petrol tank. The thing that makes it switchable is a reserve tank switch in the bottom of the tank. This switch has two brass tubes sticking up into the tank. On normal position the longer brass tube sticks up more than the other tube and so only allows about the top 9 gallons or so to be sent to the engine. There is a center position which shuts off the fuel flow, and the last position suck the last gallon or so through a shorter brass tube. We cut off that short tube to get a bit more of the fuel out of the tank. This also prevents water from being trapped in the bottom of the tank where it rusts through and causes fuel leaks. Alot easier to drain the carb to get rid of water than the gas tank!!
We have been putting these switches in our later buses and will be putting them in the bugs and Ghias. Very nice when one wants to take out the engine or replace fuel lines one can shut off the fuel flow. Also if one wants to one can easily rig in the type 1s a rod to be able to switch the reserve switch by reaching around the passenger side front tire. That way you do not have to drill a hole into the interior.
