Decisions decisions  I think I may just look around for another Fairlane... I'm unsure of a Taurus now with all the problems you are telling me about them. My Fairlane has never given me any major problems. It has now travelled 258,000 km and does not blow smoke or even use oil. Still drives beautifully but, she is just showing her age a little now.
My folks own a Toyota Camry nice car if you're of the grey hair fraternity does'nt do alot for me and a Subaru is just too small for towing my projects. I have always owned a Ford and found them to be really reliable but, a Taurus hmmm :?
This is my current Fairlane I might just keep the damn thing for a few more years

| ford tuares suck. I had one that i would have to charge before i could drive it, then i fixed that problem then it was the fuel pump. After i fix the fuel pump it needed a rediator. Then this one day i got lucky and some one ran into me. it was the best moment i had with that car. |

| I'm a dedicated Taurus fan. In the past I've had an '86 wagon, a '93 wagon, a '95 sedan and an '89 SHO. I currently have an '86 Sable Wagon (wife's car with 80K miles), an '86 MT-5 (entry level 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual) sedan and an '86 MT-5 wagon. The MT-5 wagon is my daily driver. It has 195K on it and runs like a champ. The two things (in my opinion) to watch out for are the 3.8 liter engine (avoid it) and the early ('86-95) AXOD automatic transmissions. That being said, I've never owned a 3.8 car, as they have a history of blowing head gaskets. I've also never had an AXOD transmission problem, but if you drive it hard, you'll probably have problems. The '96-00 Taurus' are the ugliest of the run, but are decent cars mechanically. I'm probably going to sell my MT-5 sedan this spring and get another SHO. |

| no no no no no no no no no a hundred thousand times NO! We don't even like them in America... and we make them! My dad had one, and it got him from point A to point B until it eventually fell apart. Obviously your a car person since you are on this site. Why not go for something that has SOMETHING that stands out... subaru's awd... german cars price tags... ANYTHING. a ford taurus is like a ham sandwich on whit bread. It satisfied your hunger but when someone asks what you had for lunch five hours later you can't remember. BORING. |

Same car. I had a 3.8l Merc wagon. Pretty decent (although boring) cars for the first 60K mi, after that, they will become wallet suckers.
I just dumped a '99 Windstar van, had to have the tranny rebuilt ($2300) at 76k. Plus two steering racks and a couple other problems that we very common on those vans.
That was the last Ford I will ever buy. |
