On my '69 beetle I can only make the wipers work at one speed. Is that all there is, or am I just not doing it right? Also, did '69's have a windshield washer system? If so, how do I work it? Thanks. :)

If there is a lever on the right of the steering column, you would just pull it. Not sure about the 69, but you should definitely have 2 speeds...really slow and somewhat less slow. Your switch should have two clicks...whether it is the dash-mount twist switch or the side column lever.

Hiya 88,
Welcome to the family!
Your 69 should have a two-speed wiper. To tell the truth, there is not much difference between the two speeds. It's likely that you may have a disconnected wire.
Since you have just purchased a Bug, let me suggest another purchase. Get your hands on a Bentley Official VW Service Manual. I think the cover color for you would be blue. In any event, this technical reference will answer most all of your questions and guide you through fix-up and repair. You need it now and you will use it in the future. Try Amazon.com for the best price.
Unless the PO was really good at maintenance (most of them are not) your washer system is probably on the fritz. It's activated by pushing in on the center of wiper control knob. From the factory this system is "powered" by the air in the spare tire. It works well IF it is maintained. A lot of folks consider it junk (largely because it often is not working when they get a car) and they replace it with an electric pump. To each his own, I like the stock system and it has served me well.

i think urs should be dash mounted....u turn the knob clockwise once and the wipers should work on low, then turn it further a lil and it would move on high..as wat the others say, there is a marginal difference in the speed of motion. anyway, check the fuses and the wiring...finally check the switch itself...regards, dev
