Volt meter on battery while idling im only showing about 5.86 volts.....
as i increase the idle it justs to 6.23+/- then when i decrease throttle it drops back down to the 5's....
sounds like a bad generator right? |

how about if you rev it? does it ever hit 7 volts? not much to go wrong with a generator, usually they dont work at all because of a bad wire. how are the brushes? a good 6v genny ahould put out 7v at least
you might also be able to pop the top off the regulator and adjust the limiting arm a little. I found instructions on the net once. |

after letting it sit while idle, i see the volts slowly drop to 5.84 or so.
if i rev it real high, it hits around 7 but quickly drops down. |

I bet if you clean the commuter with some sand paper, check and clean the connections and maybe put new brushes if you need them it will put out 7volts.

The generator wasnt capable of properly charging at idle - in fact your charging warning light may well flicker at idle due to the low output, once you rev its ok. You may of course further improve the output by servicing, such as cleaning conections, new brushes, regulator etc, but dont expect 7 volts at idle it will never happen, an alternator is the only way to get charging at idle, tho thats obviously not 6v is it!
