Hi everyone:
Recently found an original '71 superbeetle 1600 with an automatic stickshift covered with dirt in a barn.Everything is there except for a carb. and the rear "automatic stickshift" emblem. My question is, I remember reading in some book years ago that the autostick had an intake/carburator specific for it???I'm not 100% sure in these fact, as I read that years ago and can't remember the specifics. If this is true, how hard is to find a specific intake and carb for that model.also what's the difference between that and a common 1600 manual trans. carb and intake manifold?Anyone can post pictures of them please? any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Carlos(bond007pr) :D |

The carb you shouldn't have to worry over. The intake however is different. It has a vaccuum port or two on it. or at least mine does, that the 4spd intake doesn't. IIRC, there is a port on the end castings as well (dual port motors). You can of course modify a 4spd intake/end casting to add the ports, but you need to pay attention to where you put them.
If you need the pictures, I can snap a couple from my 72, with has a dual port motor. I can also get the single port picutres as I have a spare setup for that. |

Please take photos of your carb and intake. My engine is a 1600 dp same as yours, so I can have an idea of the differences.Other thing, is it possible to install a Bocar mexican 34 pict 3 in it without any mods, just as you would do on a standard transmission 1600 dp beetle? Please let me know.
Thanks,

Yes, you can use a BOCAR. Here is a quickie pic that I have on file already.

That is a BOCAR carb in there. |

| For whatever unknown reason, my 4-speed Beetle has an autostick intake on it. The previous owner just put hoses on the extra vacuum ports and blocked them....seems to work fine. He also installed a brand new Solex carb before I bought it. You should be able to put whatever carb you want on it (although mine required an adapter plate). |

| Yours might have been a conversion. Capping off the unused ports is an ok method for converting instead of buying 4spd bits. |

Hiya Bond,
Cobey has you covered.
There are a couple of trivial points of interest to this situation though.......
Your AutoStick never did have an Automatic Stick Shift badge on the rear decklid. That was only in 68 and the very beginning of 69. After that all AutoSticks have the regular old Volkswagen badge on the rear decklid. They did however come with a dealer applied (sometimes) decal in the rear window.
And the intake manifold.......you can also use a bus intake manifold from 71. The Type 2 in 71 had a port on the intake manifold to accomodate the brake booster. Aside from the part number, it is exactly the same as the Type 1 AutoStick intake manifold. As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I'm running on my 73 1600 dp Autostick.
