I am rebuilding a 1980 VW Vanagon with 2 litre Air Cooled Engine. This vehicle was bought in California (by my brother). The engine is assembled and the next job is to assemble the Exhaust System. Before we started, we ordered a large inventory of parts. Now we have several pieces of Exaust part and are missing others.
(1) Where can I get a drawing of the Exaust System so I can mark the parts I need?
(2) I also need several other parts & the harness for this car. Can somebody recommend a (knowledgable) seller who can provide parts for this vehicle?
(3) Couple of months ago, I was given name of a company, ouside Austin (?), TX which claimed to have 80 acres of VW vehicles. Does anybody can provide name and/or phone number of this company?
Thanks in advance.

The CATalytic converter gets very hot in order to function properly. It sits close to the head so it tends to cook oil to the inside of the valve cover (as well as making it very tough to get to the valves).
Look a few posts down regarding overheating issues and a nice picture of the exhaust system is in there.
The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system is another pig that barely helps when functional and makes tuning a nightmare when non-functional.

| Ya think ya can pass Cali smog with an empty cat? Assuming your engine is running right? I kinda get the idea that smog values depend on model year. I forget, but are the values allowed higher for the old Vanagons? |
