Go to this link:
http://www.thebugshop.org/gotech.htm
Click on "What to look for when buying". It covers all the main points.
Is this going to be your daily driver or a project to work on/restore? That makes a big difference in what to look for.

daily driver...ive seen the car close up..no visible rust and the interior is clean..anything is better than the car i have now..( i dont have one) i have always loved the beetle and am willing to work on it every weekend to maintain it...

check the floor panels and the heater channels. rot in the floor panels can be easy to overcome but it is still a pain. but if there are visible rust or rot in the heater channels then i would say that you are in for a ride. it is not easy to relieve this problem but it can be rectified if you take time. regards, dev
