View original topic: 87 Westy AC upgrade

I just had a quick question about the AC hose parts being different from the old SD510 and the SD709. Do you know of a parts place (other than dealer) that might carry the new hose #2 and #4 as shown in Bentley page 87.16? Already have a new dryer. Also how many other surprises should I expect?

Thanks

I just did a swap from the 510 to the 709

make sure you get a unit that has the bolt hole on the back which allows that bracket to hold the hoses in place....

my 84 pump would not work on a 87

Does that 7 plunger pump work better than the 5, that you can notice.???

You using R134 or R12?

I understand the last vans had a bigger evaporator or is it condensor? Wonder if you can mix and match those items into an earlier van, especially like my 85 Westy???? I don't want to pull new A/C lines in though.

Actually, although less efficent, I would think the rare (dealer installed) front dash mounted A/C would be far more useful in a Westy than that big box that is in the back. I don't need the back of my head cooled, I want the A/C to hit me square in the frontal (lobe) parts.

I'll let you know if the 7 pumps better than the 5. The 5 arrived DOA with the van so I have nothting to compare that's why I am changing it out. I am with you, I don't want the back of my head cool either but right now I'll take what I can get. It's tooooooo hot to run with open windows only.

Got the 709 in yesterday, hooked up the lines (VW wants $270 for those two new sections of pipe) charged it up and it was blowing 49 while 89 outside. Much better than the 89 and 89 I had before. I think the old 510 was dead and needed to be replaced. I don't have to wear a jacket inside but the back of my head feels better.

I use a mixture of R-134 and Enviro-Safe Refrigerant....
