New guy here...been on The Samba for awhile with my Bus and a 74'vert... I just picked up a 74 Baja, lightly rolled. Cheap...real cheap. The roof and the left vent wing are crushed. I'm looking for pics of "topless" Bajas....like SHMO's. His has got to be the nicest I've seen...
So if you have pics or links to any other "topless" Baja's, let's have them!
Or...does anyone know of a full length fiberglass body for sale, cheap?
Thanks! |

SHMO's is an inspiration...pretty lofty goals. Here's mine, in it's current "lightly rolled" state. Drove it home, runs great!

it seems that shmo's got the dream bug eh? It is definetly SWEET, but come on guys, think original. Bugs are all about being different.
Think outside the BUG

| I had been looking at the pics of your baja Randyzzz and I have to say it looks damn good with the roof pushed down on the cage....I would be tempted to keep it like that, fix that fiberglass on the front corner and call it good. |

Roll cage I wish! There's no cage in there, just a great testament to VW build strength! (There will be a cage when I'm done).
Sorta bummed, the body has alot more issues than I initially saw...looks like it spent some time at the coast...the pan is ok but the body is rusting from the inside, between the double walled panels. Wierd. The rust weakened things, and there's alot of compression bending at the lower B pillars and the whole body is skewed to the right a bit.
So...my choices are to ...
1. Beat the roof up, throw in a plexi windshield, and have a fun thrasher.
2. Find a replacement body, (I may have a line on one) and transfer the good parts..
3.Forget the body, get a fiberglass dune buggy body and make it nice.
Seeing as the motor appears to be a fresh rebuild, I'm leaning towards #3.
What do you guys think? |

If you really want to know what I think, I think fiberglass buggies are gay. I never fully understood the attraction people have to them. If you really want a "Kit car", just go buy one of those 1929 Mercedes replicas...lol
Buy a different body and build yourself a Baja.

I agree, a 1929 Mercedes replica would be gay....I have the same opinion of the t-bucket fiberglass...
I was thinking along the lines of a Manx-style body.
SHMO, now that I've seen your's, If I do build a steel body Baja, I won't be happy unless it's the same build quality....and I want to be driving this thing SOON!
Looks like the only solution will be to find another complete Bug, so I can have a fiberglass buggy and a steel body Baja....
It's a sickness, I tell 'ya! I've got 3 Jeeps and 2 VW's already...thank God for an understanding wife... |

Aint that the truth? A guy is never happy until he has one of every make, model and color. I own 3 snowmobiles, road a total of 8 times last season, but hell I would buy another new one if the wife wasn't looking....lol

Well, SHMO, looks like your advise will be heeded. The wife and I went to the Portland Bug-In today...and there were some awesome Baja's. No topless ones, but still awesome. After much discussion, I decided to keep my Bug a Bug...now I just need to find a new body, front beam, ect....
I should have brought my trailer...there was a comlplete good body for $20.00, a complete 'Vert for $500.00, and a ton of parts. I also got a line on a free body and pan near me, and a free Ghia Baja with a fiberglass front end about a mile away from my house!
And my wife almost bought a sweet Squareback....almost. |
