| look at the vanagon classifieds,pg.1 in missouri aircooled vanagon for 1500 bucks blue. it's not a westy but you won't really find a very good vanagon westy for 1500. however you could get a regular vanagon and swap the seats for a z-bed and cabinets. if you have time to really search you'd be able to find a baywindow westy for that price, may not look too hot but should run good. check out the baywindow part of the class. ads. good luck. |

| If I were 16 and had a Westy...watch out...damn I would have had a lot more fun in my youth! Now there is a smart kid. I was too stupid. I had to have an antique Porsche (1956 A) How dumb of me. I'd still have the Westy as the 356 turned out to be too impractical. Fun and all but not very useful. (BTW: We had a repair business so upkeep was zero.) Now many cars later I have something I can really use. I am really liking my Westy these days. |

Seen this on my Credit Union site. Not in MO but IL very close to ST Louis
1974 vw westfalia camper van $550 obo
would make for a great project. it needs a good deal of work but it is worth the time. i gathered too many projects and i need to focus on my vw bug. underside is rusty, needs new floor pans, and some body rust. engine needs to be rebuilt, but i can still drive it about 40 miles one way without any problems. this is a pop top camper with working sink and ice box (not a fridge). has fairly new tires. the front disc brakes have less than 5,000 miles on them. needs some electrical attention. email for pictures i will get some.

| First off AIN'T NO SUCH THING! Don't believe me?? Look at the Autotrader ads or eBay. Westys that run (especially ones that run well and are clean) are gold! Most people are happy with a Westy that has a straight body and clean camper stuff and worry about the engine later. Westy's are also a prime candidate for Subaru/ etc engine conversions. Might ewant to consider a regular Vanagon and trick out the interior to your taste. Cheaper way to go and you get to practice your wrenching skills. |

I's not a Westy and i don't know the guy, but it's a start and it's in your price range.
I started working on my first car at 16. Didn't have a clue, but alot of ambition, I had to have a Fiat, the learning curve is steep.
If you have your heart set on something this old, be ready to fix it yourself or have deep pockets to pay someone.
After fixing lots of autos I'd say an old Vanagon is a good one to learn on. |
