Hi
I'm in the process of adding a type 3 disc equipped Bay Window beam in my Splitty, does anyone sell just the discs alone with different patterns, I'd prefer not to use adapters...
Thanks
Graham

i do beleive airkewld just adverstised something like this. it's in the thread on type3 dropped spindles.

Notched Tue Jul 19, 2005 3:58 pm

You steal our parts, then ask for help? Sheesh. :-k

Will the discs fit on the spindles with the stock bearings? I've never heard of this before. I'd be really surprised if this will work.

Oh, to answer your question, I don't think there are blank Type 3 disks available. Mr. Airkewld seems to be making progress on some after market disks for the front of a Type 3, and states that any bolt pattern is available (somewhere he said that, not in the selection):

You'll have to scroll down for the rotor only package - kinda steep at $220/pair (says ea. but I think that's for a pair).

Airkewld Tue Jul 19, 2005 4:42 pm

They are $220 a piece. The bolt patterns can be changed whever you want and the track will never change. Even wide 5! The best thing about these rotors, you will NEVER have to change the rotor, it will never wear out, NEVER. The BAD BRAKE, type 1 and 3, rotors are the same and use stock bearing and seals.

I converted the front of my 65 from drum to disc up front with 69 T3 spindles and Ghia rotors drilled to Porsche 5x130 pattern. I used new races, bearings and tierod ends. No problems, in fact pretty easy. I got the spindles from Martin @ the DDB and the rotors from SoCalAutoParts in Long Beach, Ca.

If you've got a beam from a 66-71 (early) then all you need is the rotors, races and bearings. Note: Mid-71 to 73 is a differnent size spindle.

Stealing is such a strong word.... :)
The beam and dropped spindles are from a 68 bus.
$440 makes me think of Porsche...

we have new blank type 3 rotors drilled and studded for $97 each in any pattern...

Hey Airkewld Pete, I find it hard to believe the rotors will NEVER wear out. Care to elaborate: what's the material, lifetime warrenty, how long has the manufacturer been in business, ...

I guarentee that as long as you own them, you will never have to replace your rotor again. The material is not soft like cast rotors are so you will never have to turn them. I am the manufacturer of these rotors.

I can see the rotor is the strong point, but is braking really improved? it looks like it uses a stock VW caliper, I can see the benefit of wanting to change lug patterns often, how much does it cost when you want to change lug patterns from one set to another?

Oops. Sorry I miss-quoted the price...

They look really nice, BTW! May be a tough sell for us cheap Type 3 owners...

Well i dont know how improved it would be over the stock Ghia set up but its the advantages that make this kit special. If you have drum brakes, this kit gives you a big advantage. If you want an improved "stopping so that you get flung out the windsheild", porsche is probably the way to go, but who wants to spend 100 bucks on brake pads. I guess i am looking at the problem everybody has when it comes to brake upgrades. Patterns, track width, replacement parts, ie bearing brake pads etc.. and rolling weight when it comes to racing. Whats even better, you still dont have to buy another rotor ever again and you can have wide five with out added track width. Different bolt patterns run about $60 per side, wide 5 slightly higher.

Just another part being made for the type three crowd, when nobody else really steps up to the plate. Having options for the type three, did i say options? Yes, i did. hopefully it will help the type 3 community along.

pimp i bought the same rotoers for the front of my fastback same rotors at bill and steves 50 bucks each drilled for alloys

Tram Wed Jul 20, 2005 8:39 pm

Not all of us are cheap. I'm considering a pair down the road drilled for 5 lug on my 34 Ghia.

Come now, Porsche pads aren't that expensive. Guy down the street from me just replaced the pads on his '88 944 for under $75 with good Raybestos that he got at Schucks (AKA Kragens). Not top-of-the-line racing stuff, but who really needs that grade of pad on a street-driven VW anyway?

Airkewld Wed Jul 20, 2005 11:05 pm

your missing the point.

$50 each wow thats a deal!

no matter who you buy parts for your car from ( Bill & Steve's, JC Whitney or Serrano's ) I can guarantee you did not get the same rotors with pressed in studs that I am selling for $50 each

are your making 2 different center hubs? you know pre 1965 type 3's have different spindles right... I ask these questions not to knock on your product, but for information,

I actually drive a very potent street type 3 that I always look to improve, ( better brakes would be one of them )

your setup aesthetically looks good ( insert bling' bling' here ) and the ability to change wheels often is great and the ever lasting rotor too... but in my opinion it most likely is not going to perform any better then a stock system, if it was packaged with a 4 piston caliper and had a larger pad to rotor surface contact this would be an big improvement for cars with major horsepower and braking issues,

Thank you for finding the point I was too drunk to make last night.

The rotor itself is a good start, but using that rotor with stock brake hydraulics (calipers, master cylinder) and stock pads just ain't going to make as much of an improvement in braking as bigger Porsche calipers and a bigger master cylinder can make.

you mean like this?
