Thanks for all the input fellers, appreciate it. As for the engine, it's still up in the air, for me at least. Have several things to do before I get to the point I need a motor anyway.
Is it a common opinion then that a 2332 and a 2110 would be equally reliable, and or last the same amount of miles? Just asking because originally I was thinking 2110 for the 90.5's, figured it would be a less wild and therefore longer lasting engine.
Also, about the 1600SP, that's what I'm running in the current baja, I have two, one drivable, the other, the dream yet to be finished, in other words, as the girlfriend says, the mutilated bug in the garage with its entrails scattered everywhere. Anyway, I can appreciate the "outrunning it in reboks on a downhill with a tailwind." Had a good laugh over that one. But, it always gets me home, albeit slowly. LOL
Thanks again for all the opinions, and keep em comin.

| As long as your motor is balanced, you use decent rods and don't let the compression get out of hand both engines should last you quite a while. Also make sure you use case savers and good head studs.OH ya, on large engines an wxternal oil cooler is always helpful.I imagine you had planned on having it full flowed anyway. |

Started with SP and DP T1s... decided more power was needed
THEN
Built an 1835... it was running hot and didn't have the right torque setup for logging trails
THEN
I started the Suby conversion... wasn't having fun with all the wiring and ducting.... sold it to a better man who completed it.... was nice -- he spent contless hours fabbing it into the car.
THEN
Stumbled accross a good condition 1800 T4... popped it in to our rail.. immediately sold the 1835 T1
THEN
Worked a 2.0 T4 into our next project with 6 rib tranny.
OVERALL OPINION... dollar for dollar and the time... A solid stock T4 may be a a good place to start. The rebuild parts for our Stock 2.0 w/FI were about $600 --- Total cost for the rebuild parts (T4 FI w/Used Trimil) and bus tranny was about $1000... this left a little in the budget for trailing arms, a chenowth cage and some fox 2.0... then Bilsteins in the front.
Remember with the HP conversion for an offroad, you'll need to budget for a better tranny system.
OPINION on VW----The great thing about sticking with VW power is that it's a snap to field swap an engine if something doesn't sound right --- yep I'm a freak who carries a spare engine in the truck. For $5k, you could get one heck of a tricked Jeep.
What about a stock T4 with a better tranny ratio? |
