I just got back from a two week climbing trip in New Mexico and Colorado. As I was cleaning those 2000 miles of bugs off my baby I got to wondering about the pros and cons of a bra. Anybody got a bra on their van? What are the pros and cons?

I've got one on my 82. Very good investment! Not only does it help with the bugs, but more importantly, its good for all those pebbles that the 16 wheelers pick up and spit back at you. Just be sure to get the correct year. I knew a guy who put an air cooled bra on a water cooled Vanagon an overheated the engine...Duh :?

I say nothing but Cons!!!

They flap (even when tight) and rub paint off, if dirt and grit gets behind them... Seen it a 1000x even when people are "careful".

Buy it in Bulk and cut and fit it...

This stuff is the bomb, call or e-mail and ask for a free sample.

Nothin but pros,

Bought from Go westy... Awesome fit- after 18 months, tight with no slack, protects from bugs and rock chips, I just take mine off when I wash the van.

I'd say... go for it.

Bras for road trips. More Pros than Cons. Take off when done.

Bra-less around town. Too much crap build up that causes issues after time. Keep it off as you will be collecting too much damaging stuff around town.

I agree with r39o...i use the bra for my van whenever i do highway trips, but take it off for in-town driving. Your paint has to breath, and if you keep it on, that will be affected as well as other issues previously mentioned.

I am with both those guys above me here. I use it for long road trips but like to go braless around town.

Take them off when they get wet.

The Rock Blocker intrigues me though.....

I expect to see alot of "bra less" at High Country Bus Festival this weekend

Oh, thats not the subject?

I have one for the '70 911 that I use on road trips, but not for any of the buses. I need a bus one for road trips.

How far is the festival from Tullahoma?

I want to inspect the bra-less that will be in attendance there. I would like to feel the surfaces for roughness and unevenness caused by not having a bra.

Approx 350 miles. 200 to knoxville, 150 to boone,nc. But Tullahoma is a heck of a long way from San Diego :o I wouldnt recommend the hands on approach, unless there is alot of pachoulie oil present

We have a plant there. Could be an excuse to go visit. That's all.

I agree. not sure what I agree with tho.....I had a bra for my 86, which I put in the cabinet in back and never once took out! It did a great job of protecting the inside of the cabinets from nicks and other damage caused by wine bottles carelessly tossed in. For that application I give it TWO THUMBS UP, although I would go with a smaller one so as to leave more room for the wine.
The sad part, I will never again toss wine bottles or anything else in that westy, as I transfered paper work on it yesterday, to someone eager to experience westy-life. Godspeed I say!
Your life is like a coin. It's the only coin you have and you have to decide how to spend it. Be careful, or someone else will try to spend it for you.
........Peace!

My Esmeralda is a liberated girl. No bra for her, but prolly a clearbra type thing when she gets painted (a whole other topic :? )

It's Friday afternoon at work (1/2 hour to go) and my mind's so shot that I can't even come up with some clever sexual innuendo about the pros and cons of a bra...

Well, I always scoffed at people with bras on their vehicles (usually the types with late model Camaros and Firebirds), but the 86 Westy I recently bought came with one! Well, I left it on for the 1000 mile trip home to Massachusetts but noticed a fair amount of road dirt under it when I took it off.

I think it makes sense to put it on for a long road trip, especially if you're exploring in the sticks and might get lost on some dirt roads (like my last trip to Cape Breton). I'd leave it off around home because 1) having it get wet and stay damp can't be good for the paint (or rust) underneath 2) I still think they look stupid (sorry, bra aficionados)...

Hey mobowesty,

Can i get a general idea of your age? My dad hates bras on cars too...just wondering if it's a generational thing.

For me, it depends on the car...but generally don't mind them. For the Vanagon, it saves on the paint job if you are road tripping....too bad it doesn't help the windshield though....hey, do they make bras for windshields? LOL!! That would be good for a blonde joke!

McHuntley Fri Jul 29, 2005 1:41 pm

My Vanagon did not have come with a bra when I got it, but it is apparent from the paint job that she had one before. She has a permanent 'tan line' across the front!

mobowesty Mon Aug 01, 2005 1:33 pm

Hi pocvw:

You asked my age. Well, I'm only 38 but I'm already an old curmudgeon. It might be a generational thing. I joke with my wife that some Friday night I'm gonna mount a huge airfoil to the roof of my 93 Escort wagon and mock the "Fast and Furious crowd" crusin' downtown... I don't get that trend either... Oh, and I'll be cranking DEVO on my 8 watt stereo system

Ericthenorse Mon Aug 01, 2005 2:28 pm

:D ARE WE NOT MEN........WE ARE DEVO!!!
