Here's a great NOOB Question!
What tins are absolutley necessary for running a baja setup?
I'm about to take all my old tins down to the local VW junkyard and I need to know what to keep for my engine rebuild.
Thanks!

Doghouse tin and oil cooler is a good setup. It's cools the engine better and looks TITS. Go for the SCAT Doghouse.

You need to keep pretty much all of it mate.
The cooling tin is essential to keep the vw eng at proper running temp
Dont throw anything away... |

| Not to hijack but I have all the topside tins on my Baja. The bottom of the engine is exposed. In other words the fins on the bottom of the heads are visible. Is there a bottom tin or is this normal? I always thought under the car there weren’t any tins? |

The most important tin is a 3x5 tin with some slotted tabs... this goes between the cylls on both sides to cool the underside of the fins.
Under this is a rounded piece of tin that covers the underside of the cylls... some people remove this if they have a skid/rock plate.
The 3x5 + Thermostat + heat risers + choke ensure your car runs uniform in all temps. |

| Not following you. I guess since mine aren’t there I can’t visualize what you are saying. I will try to search around for a picture or something. |

most DON"T forget it, they just don't see it up there and unless they pull the heads off, they are not coming off/out. If your pulling the tins for a cut baja/open rail, just make sure that they are up in there over the push rod tubes. |

Sorry --- I meant when people rebuild baja/buggy engines.. they leave the thermostat, under tin etc all off.
