I am going to outback motors tonight( my dad is best friends with the owner) so I am probable going to end up puting in a subi in my baja. I just was wondering what kind of smog checks and regitstration there is.

what is the engine going into?

Tim10 Thu Jul 28, 2005 1:50 pm

where I live none...

In cali we had the year break when you were required to have the MFG supplied smog equipment...

This created a ball of problems -- who's mfg... what year to check etc.

Remember if you're using a new Suby.. they could hold you to the new smog regs.

if your car is a 74 or older, registered as a VW, no problem. you wont get hassled at all

Thats a good friend to have. Wish he was my dads friend because Im planning a Subie conversion in my Thing.

Anyway......as long as you build a car that is 1975 or earlier, there is no smog check required. Last year the smog law was changed AGAIN, and it is now frozen at the 75/76 model year split. Prior to that it was a 30 year rolling exemption. Thats how the 74s and 75s went smog exempt. They didnt like cars falling out of the smog check program, so they did away with the 30 year rolling exemption and froze it at 1975. If you are building a 71/72, you have no problem, no smog checks required........as the law stands. Dont hold your breath, Im sure they will change it again in the future.

DONT BE SURPRISED IF THE DEMOCRATS CHANGE THE LAW AGAIN, THEY CANT BE TRUSTED. CA IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHY NOT TO VOTE "D." THEY WANT TO TAKE YOUR OLD CAR AWAY, CRUSH IT, AND FORCE YOU INTO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.

Just to clarify, you dont have to have smog checks, however, you are SUPPOSED to have all the original smog equipment on any vehicle that is 66 or later. Sure, they dont check you out every two years, but the way the law is written, you are not legally allowed to remove or change anything on a smog check exempt car. Most people dis-regard this, but that is how the law is actually written. Practical application is that anything goes once your car is smog check exempt, even though it isnt legal.

Matt...

Are you really planning a suby in a thing???

Not sure it will fit without hacking the car... Things look terrible wiht the rear end messed up.

Looking to learn.

Yes, thats the plan. Length wise it will fit in the engine compartment with the decklid in place. There are a few obstacles, but it appears do-able. We will see.....

And for the record, I dont vote for Socialists/borderline Communists....LOL! :agrue:
