I was just reading through my "How to build a dune buggy by Earl Duty" book, and came accross an interesting find. It shows the engine they rebuild before teardown, and it has an alternator. It even specifically states "alternator stand" in the engine teardown procedure. When it gets put back together, they use a generator and the required stand. It makes no mention of the change, or why they would use the generator vs. an alternator in which they already had. :-s Anyone else notice this? And more importantly, why would they go *from* an alternator, and go *to* a generator? Seems backwards to me, unless I'm just missing something.

The generator might be slightly more reliable offroad, no diodes to burn out I think, but you have a regulator that may go bad, but other than that I think the alternator is a much better choice. Maybe they installed the gen. because thats all they had when they reassembled?

Beats me :?: I'm building a buggy right now, and my donor car has a 1600 DP with a generator. I was considering doing an alternator swap, but just thought it was wierd that they went to the generator instead. It doesn't look as if they were cutting costs on anything in the build, as they used a lot of great products to build it. He stated it was going to be used for both street and offroad. Just thought it was strange, so I'm still debating on the swap.

Some single carb setups require a generator because of clearence issues.

I just used a grinder to "clearance" my alternator/Bocar carb combo on my street Bug. It's close, but it works great.

Years back before cell phones and GPS we used to go WAY back in Death Valley on runs.
We'd carry a spare battery ALSO disconnect the running battery and ONLY use the battery to get the car started. This was to ensure we had ZERO chances of drain and being a hundred miles from water.
Not sure if this is OK with an alternator --- I've always found Generators to be a bit more solid and reliable.
