| Vanagon just returned from a small road trip. SoCal to Flordia to see the Space Shuttle launch. With all the side trips in 1 month we added 8075 miles to the odo. Car used zero coolant and right around 1 cup of oil. Zero issues, thanks to EuroPro and the subie motor they put in there. |

So you are in So Cali. That means it passes smog. Good. Next question is CO$T????? What all did they do? Trans cooler? Trans shift points? Other?
What kinda milage did you get? Vibrations? A/C? Is it a Westy?
I got lots of questions, because our 85 Westy has that pathetic 82HP engine and I do not yet know what to do? GoWesty or Suby? |

wanna little advice?
If you're the do-it-yourself type: It's a no brainer choice. The suby install will cost you about 3000-3500, total.
To have it installed, about 8000-8500 total, including a new subaru engine, but then you'll probably want bigger brakes (800 for S.A., unless you want to try the junkyards for an Audi match-up), against maybe 5000 for a gowesty installed.
But the bigger gowesty's need premium gas and the suby runs on regular.
And the Suby's good for a LOT of miles, and if you need another one, you can go with another cheap suby engine, instead of another 3000 wbx.
The suby's are seemingly bulletproof and require little in the way of maintenance
Lots of other things like that to consider............ |

We bought it this way, but we have the records. The motor installed from europro (vanagons are the bulk of there work as I understand it, last itme I was there they had 2 syncros one westy, one double cab, both getting subaru motors) was 6000, the motor had 70000 miles on it, the conversion is smog legal and has the CARB ID sticker and passes as a legacy, which is way cleaner then the stock motor. WAY less vibration than the stock motor and more quiet too.
The a/c works, and the PO had a/c routed to the front, yes it is a westy.
Auto trans shift points can be changed ($700) but works fine the way it is, there is a trans cooler.
Gets about 3-5 mpg better milage.
The only issue we have now is that the cruise control, the vac pump died and we are looking for a replacement, but it did work when we got it.
The motor is sooooo much better than the VW unit it is just amazing. Not all that much faster than our 91 mulitvan, but it is alot smoother doesnt feel like you are beating the hell out of it at 70mph on the freeway, and it actually accelerates above 60.... |
