Any of you guys know Greg Stogren?

I've only met Greg through internet forums, but he seems like a hell of a guy! This is his car:

He'll be in the next issue of Hot VW's. Click on the pic for some more info and pics of the car.

I have run into him a few times. I have also seen that car, it was done quite nicely.

Do you know someone from Canada named Ernie Manaha, a former Filipino and now a naturalized Canadian, who is a friend of mine and also a Volkswagen buff. Any information, please do let me know. Ty.

The car is listed on the site here now for $45,000

Geez, it's amazing what you find when you google your name :o

I'm a proud air-cooled VW lover in Oakville, Ontario. I own a business called Tuned Perfection. www.tunedperfection.com

My '56 is indeed for sale. Is $45K a lot of money? You bet it is. But nothing near what I have tied up in the car. It was appraised at $60K CDN before the interior was done. I'm not in a hurry to sell, and just picked up an enclosed trailer to haul the car around in. But if someone around the world has $45K burning a hole in their pocket, and they want a clean '56 rag that will turn 11's at the track and drive there and back, I have one that fits the bill. I have seen other clean VWs go for around the same price (give or take) that were either only for show, or for race. Mine does both and is VERY streetable as well.

I think the air cooled VW scene is actually starting to grow a bit again from it's slump. I still remember the good old days in the early '90's when we had club cruises to and from the shows, and tons of shows to attend like Goat Island, Kingston, Sparta (London). Keep visiting my site to see what I have planned for 2007.

The car is very clean! I can only imagine what you spent on the build...

Nice Work.

Im so shocked that not a single person from Campbell River BC was on here. Theres tons of volkswagens here. Not only that there is an awsome repair shop and a dealership just south of campbell river in Courtney. Also Campbell River used to have a dealership called targa motors. I even know the guy who ran the dealership ( he switch from volkswagens to GMC in the 90's) and one of the mechanics who worked there is a good friend. He owns an incredible Dune buggy that looks like cover material for any magazine. The guy who ran the dealership can still order parts for any VW. We even had a volkswagen show here two summers ago in elk falls provincial park. Like Victoria we also have very mild weather. We are 3hours north of it on the island after all. would be cool to get in touch with some other volkswagen enthusiest in Campbell River Courtney area.

Wow, Vancouver Island is well represented in this thread! I'm somewhere between Campbell River and Victoria myself, although started my VW addiction down in Victoria.

Here's a couple shots of my '57 Sunroof sitting in its new garage...

Hey! Good to see you, hank!

Don't let the photos fool you. That was the 'posterity' photo shoot before I started moving all the crap into the garage. By the end of the month, it will be sharing the space with 3 other Beetles, a Yamaha V-Twin and all my accumulated tools and junk and stuff.

Looked good for a few days though!

Hello fellow Canadians, just found this post and am glad to hear that there is more bugs coming out of the woodwork (as it were) here up north. I live in North Bay, Ontario, but travel fairly extensively for my work. I just spent a week in Richmond BC in early January...just in time for a snow storm....no old vdubs out that day.

My first bug was a 1980 1300S I owned when I lived in Yugoslavia for 2 years. My second was a 1974 sedan I restored and sold. The third is a 1963 deluxe that was too far gone to resore and the front end of which is now going to be my stereo stand in my living room (the wife likes the vw's too, she has a 2004 New Beetle vert, don't hold that against me). My third is a 1957 deluxe and the one I am working on restoring now is a 1954 european deluxe with all the euro goodies.

There are a few other guys here in North Bay with bugs and we get together when we can, and get to see the Sudbury folks occasionally as well. One of these years when I get the 54 back on the road I will be doing the tour of Ontario, to start, and would love to visit and see other folks vdubs.

Keep posting here on the samba, so we can keep up on the Canadian scene.

Cheers,
Mike 8)

Before The Samba melted down there was some talk from Greg about a new show for this season...

April 14th at Johns Bug Shop is the date for the spring swap... It should be wet and miserable as always

Patty B. Sat Feb 24, 2007 3:12 pm

How big a do is that swap?
Is it worth the trip to Niagara Falls?

Tuned Perfection Sun Feb 25, 2007 6:03 am

Patty:
Definitely try to make the spring swap at John's, at least to meet some other VW lovers. You may find a used part or 2 worth having as spares, or that you need for your car. Sometimes the weather is decent and some people will drive their air cooled VWs down.

As for my show, never really a plan for a full fledged show, but I do have a drag day going at Toronto Motorsports Park the day before the June Jitterbug, so on June 23. Tell all your air-cooled buddies because I posted on the VW Vortex and there is a big interest from the water pumpers! Watch my website for details as the plan comes together! Any thoughts or ideas for it let me know. I would like as many VWs to show up as possible, even if you have no interest in racing and just want to watch.

It depends on the weather that day. It's usually well attended and lasts a few hours. John also puts a few specials on that day in the shop as well.

I have never come home without something.

Long live the Frozen North. If somebody will tell me how to post pics I'll put up some of my almost completed 54 which is safely stored in one side of my garage here in Markham. Owned a 62 Deluxe in 1968 attending U of Toronto. Got smushed one night and bought a 58 vert for $50 sans engine and put the 62 1200 in the vert. Only had one scissors jack which was holding the car up so used 2 hockey sticks to lift it out. How Canadian EH?! Being an eastern car the 58 floor turned out to be totally rotten. Then bought a 64, put on an extractor, bigger carb jet and 2 front chrome 356 rims I trucked back from a trip to L A. Thought I was pretty cool back in the day. Several years ago visited the Great Canadian Bug Show (in Scarborough at that time) and got interested again. Restored a 59 from a lady who had owned it for 30 years. Much new metal needed! It's now up Ottawa way. Found the 54 on Old Car Trader website before magazine came out. Rushed out to look at it and bought it immediately. It came down from Calgary and I couldn't believe it when I had it stripped. NO bondo, NO welding, just SOLID all original metal (hearts, working semaphores, W-decklid, etc). Now 1600 w/ 12 V and repro Sprint Stars. Maybe see some of you this summer at the shows! :D Got some pics up now. Just click on GALLERY under this post.

shawns73 Wed Feb 28, 2007 6:39 am

Nice 58 vert, Bruce :)

We seemed to have lost a number of posts since the "crash". I'm in the midst of an engine rebuild on my 73 super, as well as some other body and interior work. You can see it in my GALLERY.
Thanks,
Shawn

Bruce MacDonald Wed Feb 28, 2007 12:45 pm

Hey Shawn, I think I recognize that garage your 73 is in. Is it near Dufferin and Finch? If so say hi to Gord for me! When I was at the Auto Show last week one of the MG owners gave me a flyer for an import show at Parliament and the Lakeshore in the Historic Distillery District from 9-2 on Sunday June 3rd. Bring your Bug if you're around. :D

shawns73 Wed Feb 28, 2007 8:26 pm

Actually, the garage is near Islington and the Queensway ( by the theatres ). My mechanic, Leo, is in the process of leasing a new shop of his own so things are quite hectic.
I know the Distillery District quite well, as I worked around the corner from it on Eastern Ave. They are also one of our clients ( advertising ).
Thanks,
Shawn
