Hey guys,
I have an old model bus trans on my buggy. The one with the big, about 4 inch, hole in the rear brake drums. I'm running 60 series tires on the rear and wearing the fool out of the outer edges. Is there any way I can level this thing out?
This is a street buggy, no off road. My next short term step is to flip the tires over but I'm hoping for something more long term. Otherwise, I might just swap the trans. I've heard you off road guys love these trannys. I'd be happy with a late model super beetle trans but this is what came with my buggy.
Thanks for any help.
Peace,
<><

my guess would be you are running a swing axle bus trans with the reduction gears.
any vw can have the rear adjusted by repositioning the springplates on the torsion bars.
as far as a bug trans swap, it would be plenty of work converting over to the type 1 trans and the IRS. it might not be too bad just swapping over to a swing axle bug trans, however. |

I don't have reduction gears but yes, it is a swing axle.
So how do I adjust the torsion bars?

| the process is not an easy one to explain. best bet is looking in any repair manual, or searching the forums here on thesamba |

Well basically you just take off the torsionbar cover and pull out the torsionbar and springplate carefully and move the brakedrums up one or two notches. Then you just press the torsionbar back in. You might have to loosen the axles and parkingbrake cables too.
Remember to be careful with the springeffect when you pull out the springplate! It might kick your hand off! |
