Already enjoying it!
Heres something that will give you a chuckle, it took me 15 minutes to find the battery! Looks like this is going to be a learning experience! |

LOL, I guess I should have shown you that!
Was the battery dead? I had to charge it before you came and picked it up. I just replaced the alternator a few months ago and I bet that battery might be week after getting discharged so much and just sitting in my driveway.
NEXT TIME CALL ME! lol |

| How about how do you get the battery out? I felt like Helen Keller trying to figure out the positive and negative! Ordered a manual on it and until it arrives I am driving blind! |

the back of the seat should pivot forward to let the bottom come up more. There are controls on the parking brake side for this.
when this is done you can pull the battery straight up. Wally World carries the battery you need for it. Be careful though, Wally World batteries usually only last 2 years TOPS! |

I found those and it did not seem to give enough room , tried several combinations on the levers. I ended up bending the tab on the inner track and that allowed the seat to slide forward enough to comne out of that track, and the outer has a cut out more forward that it can be lifted out. Was unsure if there was a magical hidden switch to raise the seat, or if I needed to put in an access door.
I looked a bit closer at the porsche rims and they look identical to the ones on the car. I am wondering if they are actually 412 rims, and he had thought the guy said they were something else. |

The controls for letting the seat tilt to access the battery seem to get hard to operate. I've needed to have my head pinned against the floor with a flashlight shining under there to see what was going on. Once you see how the mechanism works, it is still difficult as you are limited on how many hands you have! |

I even had the wife helping out, but it is kind of odd that it has the cut-out on the outer track for the mount to pull up, but the pass side is half the length of the drivers and no slot. I am going to leave the inner ones tab bent, I can now slide the seat forward, the mount slides out on the inner, then the outer gets to the slot and presto. Easy in and easy out now.
Now if I can figure out a way to make a removeable rear clip to access the engine........ |

I found the operating rod and bellcranks for the hidden double-secret driver's seat release (under the left front edge of the seat) had bent and distorted so much from use that I couldn't release the seatback that way. When I had the seat out I cut an inch or so from the operating rod and re-bent the end, and now the double-secret release lever works right (again).
Hey, glad a VW fan got Herr Bus's 412. I was tempted, but it's a 4-ho drive from Houston to get to DB's place, and I'm fresh out of ho's.
The removable rear clip is called a Variant...and yeah, it's so nice to get to the entire engine from above or below! |

And being driven it is! Every day, already put about 500 on it and steadily rising!
Anybody have a source on a manual exclusivly for them? So far I have only found ones that include them but no great detail. |

The most universally useful affordable one IMHO is the Haynes manual, and you can find them from time to time on the ebaything. If you can't find one that way, I happen to have a spare I'd be willing to sell for cheap (I bid on one after I got mine just for grins, and doggone if I didn't win it!).
You'll probably find that gathering a range of info is good. The Chilton import manuals are useless, the Clymer T4 manual is minimally useful, the Muir "Idiot" book a little better, the Bentley T3 manual is very good for the auto trans only, and the best is one of those FSMs from VWoA from the ebaything, or a CD-ROM from Bentley with the same thing (at around 100 shekels, ouch!). Check your public library, if it's been around since the 70's it may have a set of Mitchell manuals, and those have some reasonably good info on T4's. The library in League City, TX has an almost complete set going back to 1969 in their reference section, for example.
Hope it helps. |
