I have a '98 NB and the ABS light keeps comming. It's intermiten and seems to happens when you slow to a stop and hear a "clunck". The light comes on and won't go out for days sometimes but when you get the car near a shop it will go out :x . We have had the car looked at by the dealer several time and to no avail. the pump,calipers and numerous other parts have been replaced under warranty(wheew!).Most recently the front control arms were replaced (still under extended warranty) but it will still do it. The car stops just fine but it's getting more frequent now. The extended warranty is up soon and we don't want to spent a bunch of $$'s after it gone. The damb car only gets driven around town by my mom and has just 41,000 miles on it. :shock:
THIS SUCKS!
We all love this car but it's wareing thin as the dealer nor the VW specialists can get it to stop doing this. I really don't want to part with it but it looks like we may and dad's not getting another one HE says. I don't blame him because of the poor VW service dept. here, I mean the started off good but just don't seem to care anymore.WHAT'S UP WITH THAT??

Sorry about the long post but I want to keep this little bit of history in the family.
Please help anyone.

Speed sensors?

I'll get a list of all the repairs done to try to solve the ABS problems.Just about everything has been replaced(thank-you warranty).

That's what we parts monkeys call 'throwing parts at it' - the most expensive form of diagnosis, when not under warranFREE.

There's no reason a good VW service department shouldn't be able to diagnose that situation. I'll repeat - GOOD - service department.

Something sounds fishy. They may just be trying to push you off until the extended warranty runs out.

i like to call these the poser mobile, simply because they cant come even close to making them like they used to. you can thank the cheap greedy big business owners.

I don't understand that POV at all. Newer cars are more complex, so nit-picky little things can cause problems....big deal. Comparing a New Beetle to an original Beetle is a stupid comparison; 'apples & oranges' - like comparing a 2003 Crown Vic to a '17 Model T. Yeah, they don't even come close to the quality they used to acheive. :roll:

Under the skin, the New Beetle(or 'poser mobile,' as you put it) is the same car as the Mk4 Golf and Jetta. My wife's '02 Jetta with the 1.8t pulls like a small train, will run all day at 85 with the air on, and still return 35mpg.....is that still a poser?

Update!

Well it's been fixed finally:
It was a speed sensor,good call Glenn.
Euro Works here in B-town found that Family f***ups installed a righthand speed sensor on the left side by rewireing it and useing e-tape to seal it up! - NO-SH**!
The tape finally chaffed through and made the ABS light flicker more and more. The "screetch-rattle-thud" was apparently caused by the stupid sensor at low speed stops giving the computer the wrong signals.
Family Motors is one piss-poor excuse for a dealer! :x

The NB has been working fine with no problems for over a month now,thank you EuroWorks!

This car is fun to drive. :wink:
