Take a look at this one, she is pretty, and pretty bad. Looks like someone cut out the center post on the Split, added some turn signals, put in a 36hp, changed the bumpers, and calling her original. Theres probably more, but that was just the first glance.

I'm not familur with "rettiwz". I do know that some owners removed the center bar in the split and put in flat glass in the 50's. It was a way to make your split look like a new car. |

Thats a split window with the center cut off. A real Oval glass lines follows the louver lines, a split goes up further towards the corners. Also an Oval isn't symetrical top/bottom, the bottom is more oblong then oval and a split is the same top and bottom.

| Looks to me like the engine is covered in paint overspray. Probably a really bad, amateur paint job. |

Oh there is an oval era antenna, and it's missing the hood vw emblem. By the way there is an antenna, but where is the radio? Hmmmmmm..... And look there are bids up to 6000.00. Maybe thats Leno himself bidding on it?
Cheers

| When that's been done to the rear windows, the correct term is "castrated". |

That isn't even a 36 HP in there!
The fuel pump is wrong.
I think it is a 40 horse with a 36 shroud. (Hell, it could be a 1600 SP with a 36 horse shroud)
And what is with the peanut signal lights?
Are those snowflake tail lights? Must be real early snowflakes! |

Good eye on that engine block. Yes it is a 40hp. It might be the "bastard" 40hp, a stale air engine with 36hp cyls and heads. I think VW made themin early '61 or so.
Yeah. the lights have been "upgraded". I've seen thesekinds of cars before, the dellers think they are worth MORE because they have been upgraded. They have no clue that the value is diminished by this.
At $9100 (reserve met or not) it is already overpriced IMO. Clues less buyers abound????
BTW: I e-mailed the seller and asked about the (apparent) engine overspray and if he still had the orginal bumpers. |

... and what is up with that decklid light? Not a popes nose, nor does it look like and oval one.
The seller replied to me and said that she will take more pics of the engine for me. It has a 40hp intake on it too.....

But wait, there's more!!
Have a look at that dash! Someone hacked another ignition switch into the dash ? One of the pod switches is missing/broken, and does the pod face look all cracked?
Its a hack-split being positioned for the gullible as an "original"......... |

It does not appear to be a bastard 40hp looking at the cylinder tin but it's hard to tell with 100% certainty.
Bastard 40hps did not have 36hp heads.
I think it's just a normal stale-air 40hp with a centrifugal distributor. |

The front hood (drivers side) looks like it has a pretty big gap
Possible front end damage not repaired right :?: :?: |
