Thought you guys would enjoy. Here's the brief:

Quote: It is a really cool car. I wasn't looking for one, didn't have the money or the space, but I couldn't pass it up.

The seller left a note in my '50 sunroof at a huge multi-marque car show saying he had a '51 std sunroof and some parts and left his number. My first thought was "you don't have a '51 std sunroof..., but I'll call you anyway".

Long story short, he did. It was tucked away in the back of that barn since '76. A 29 Fraizer convertible can be seen next to it, that was his mom's graduation present. he wasn't into VWs anymore (but still Fraziers), had no idea what it was worth, and fortunately none of my VW friends knew about it or they would have run me over in their truck to get it.

Had my friend Bill (highly allergic, hence the gas mask.. nice guy though) help me out with a trailer and the van, take all of the parts that were part of this "deal". See all those wheels? 11 of them were pre-A Porsche 356 rims. Tons of rare stuff, box of sems, hazet tool kit.. I kept pinching myself.

And BTW, know the #6 Heb that is for sale for $100,000? The seller used to own it, bought in Hershey PA in the 70s... for $150!!!

thread..

I will murder you, skin you, and wear you like a human suit in order to assimilate myself seamlessly into your lifestyle, and thus obtain that car.

Germanpride Fri Aug 26, 2005 12:11 am

WOW.

Is that the original paint? That's a beautiful score..lucky bastard!!!

Skim Fri Aug 26, 2005 1:14 am

Damn theres some hidden treasures up in the north east.

Franklins were aircooled made til the mid '30's.
Frasiers were made after WW2. Not aircooled.
There seems to be a bit of cross interest between VW's & Franklins.

kafer53 Fri Aug 26, 2005 5:52 am

Awesome! It just goes to show you that those hidden gems are still out there. Can't believe he got such a complete car!

spookymulder Fri Aug 26, 2005 6:08 am

PM me if you want to sell those Porsche 16"'s!

25 years now in the hobby, and I had never seen a std sunroof before in person. I know of a few late 50s ones, and saw a pic of a zwitter std. sunroof, but never a '51.

Not the original paint, but it was repainted a close match. The bottom is quite rusty, but I recently scored a set of mint original '54 pans that are correct for that car (sans the seat rails). All the other "bits" it needs sheet metal-wise are easy to find in comparison.

Typo, I meant Franklin, not Frazier. He took me for a ride in his "dual cowl" convertible '31. Car has to be 31 feet long, with wooden spoke wheels and a crash case. HUGE inline air cooled 6. Block has to be neary 4 feet long. He's had it since '54 and has put 250,000 miles on it. No s&it. Patina to the max, but 100% mechanically.

You can't see it from the pics too well, but that '51 was filled to the roof with split parts. Over the years every thing he found he just stuffed in there. An entire second spit interior, all the door HW, box of 7 sems, some ribbed, tool rolls. Extral split taillights and (ready for this?) and NOS complete speedo pos still in the box. Pair of new keys tied to one of the wires. (NOT for sale) Going through that car was better than any Christmas morning I remember. At least until got everything out and saw the condition of the floors and heater channels...

Took the words right out of my mouth, err, from my keyboard.

Oh my. OH MY! John, take a pat on the back for pursuing that incredible lead! Will be looking forward to future "installments" on this car.

johnshenry Fri Aug 26, 2005 7:23 am

I'll post some project pics here as I go along.

I sold all the P-rims after I got the stuff home. I sold all the parts I didn't want, and in a month had paid for the whole package..

Rick Fri Aug 26, 2005 7:36 am

 That is a beauty! Man what a score! I keep waiting for something like that to happen to me. I'm hoping to move to splitville before prices get too out of control.

Richard Roth Fri Aug 26, 2005 7:54 am

Now that's the kinda stuff VW dreams are made of !

I'm just a wee bit curious to know what the barn owner was paid for that car, to add a bit of injustice to my feelings that "this never happens to me," depsite all the weird phone calls I get about VWs since my phone number was posted on the web. John, do you know? This sense of injustice-induced outrage keeps my hopes alive that I, too, will someday have a barn-fresh treasure.

zaizai Fri Aug 26, 2005 1:54 pm

How is the restoration coming along ;)

VW Baron Fri Aug 26, 2005 3:36 pm

Holy guacamole!

That was quite a find indeed, though I have to admit (being a relative n00b) that my knowledge of VWs would not be astute enough to fully appreciate all the rare goodies that was found there if I had made a similar find.
