View original topic: Re-Installing my Torsion Arms
VW_55_VW Mon Sep 12, 2005 8:22 pm

Hey there! Ok I am at the pint now I am re-assembling my pan. I am getting ready to put in my torsion arms and want to try and get it right on the first try. So any and all suggestions and comment swould be greatly appreciated. Here is what I know/or believe to know so far.

The Trosion arms are supposed be angled at 7 degrees down...correct?

To do this I need a rachet of some sort to pull the plates up from the 7 degrees to where it will fit in the space provided, I guess this is setting the load or something? Could use some suggestions here....

I tried finding some info on here, but was not getting very far, it's either been awhile since someone has asked and it's buried or I ws not asking it to find the right question.

Anyways the data needed is for my early 52 Split.

Thanks for your time.
Gary

Will post some pics of recent progress real soon.

When I installed them in my '70, they would only fit one way.

gary,

you could try and use one of these...

or set a floor jack under the spring plate and jack it up slowly. when it is up to the ridge that it sits on, try and gently pry/nudge it off the jack and onto the stop.

i dont know the correct angle of the spring plates off hand.

good luck.

Put a level on your tunnel and make sure the pan is level. Set for the Bentley manual and you will be fine IF you have a Zwitter. I know the spring rate was different on the earlier split and the "off stop" setting might be/probably is different.

Eventually I'll be taking my '51 chassis down and will measure that angle before I pull the torsion springs out...
