Chassisnummer and bodynummer.

The original Humber test kubel turned up in a barn in Scotland back in the 1970's-- can't get much older than the prototype. The body was missing but the pan and running gear was there.

You might ask over on the Yahoo Kubelwagen newsgroup:

I have a 40 chassis on my 44 body. Don't have the numbers off hand. Most Kubels I've seen are 42 and up, usually 44 the most common.

I'm no expert...but the VIN plate read "Volkswagenwerk". Seems like that early of a car would just say "KDF or whatever...I was under the impression that the "Volkswagenwerk AG" would not have come along till after the war? Please correct me if im lost?

was an Organisation of the Nazi-Regime for the things people can do after work. They built Hotels, organisated hollydays, built ships - and they organisated the Volkswagenwerk in the late 1930s. On every original ID-Plate, the Volkswagenwerk is written as the producer - and as the type you can find the KDF Type xx.Volkswagen was named as "Volkswagen GmbH" - and in 1960 they moved the company into "Volkswagen AG"

Not Perfect.... Would you care to tell us what is wrong with this less than perfect example. :?

Steering wheel (what is that thing from) is wrong, front turn signal added, rear taillights wrong location, mudguards??, and camo bushes aren't authentic  Alot of the accessories seems not correct (and jerry can usually attached to the rear, shovel in the front). But overall who cares really.

It must be the oldest.. In restoring my own chassis number 01451, I have looked at Hermann Walters ch no 0012X, Schuckenbomers ch no 0073X and Dick Christensens 0094X. Up until now I have believed these to have been the oldest. Congratulations on yet another great find for the collection Christian!

Dear Oystein,

nice to hear that you also own a 1940. Great car for a nice guy. But you forgot the 1940 Kübelwagen of Hartmut Bernotat. Hartmut found this car in the GDR during the kommunistic time. He restaured the car with nearly 100% original parts - it is one of the best Kübelwagen I ever have seen in my life.

The car has got a chassis-number round about 600 - sorry, that I don't know it exactly.

kdfkid Fri Sep 16, 2005 1:40 pm

Hi Guys,
today i got info that my Kübel was produced at the 15 of August 1940.
They started building the Kübel at Wolfsburg at the 3. of August.
Does someone know when Vw send the 2 Kübel for testing to Africa and if they returned after testing back to Germany
Bye Christian

Amazing how much rare stuff survived. I know a guy in Texas that got Herman's Bug. Great dove hunting vehicle.
