Anyone hear of anyone putting a Chevy small block V8 in a 412 wagon before? I built a V8 Super already but it was simple. Truck frame and one off pan. Simple. But with the 412 its gonna be a little harder with it being a unibody car. I plan on putting a Chevy 350 in it with a Turbo 350 with an S-dime rear end. It is probably gonna take a while to plan out and build so if anyone has any ideas on what I should do post'em and let me know. Ill keep you updated on my progress by posting pics.

Too extreme for my taste.... it'll be interesting to be see how you do it, but for me, my VWs will have VW engines. :)

What are you talking about? Too extreme? A true VW enthusiest goes all out in modifying their car. Oh, and if I could find one, I would drop a turbo Cayenne motor in it!

anglodeutsch4 Fri Sep 16, 2005 4:45 pm

Cayenne? Wasserpumpfer? How about Turbo Carrera? Mucho mo bettah. And mucho mo rarer, and more $$$, too :D

ubercrap Sat Sep 17, 2005 6:26 pm

Would this be a mid-engine?

anglodeutsch4 Sun Sep 18, 2005 3:17 pm

OK, how's this for thinking out of the box, guys...a twin-rotor Mazda RX7 Turbo powerplant would probably fit in the rear of a 412 sedan, though finding a place for the radiator might be interesting... :? maybe like a Fiat 850 or Sunbeam Imp, with the rad beside the engine?

Don't ask me why, but I got the double post monster...

I am going to put a v-12 in one, right down the middle of the passenger compartment!

I stand by my "too extreme" assessment. I like the VW's balance of weight with the aircooled flat 4. Throwing in a big V8, cutting the body to shreds just to mount it, isn't my thing.

If I was to do conversion, I'd do a rotary, wasserboxer, or maybe a 911 six. I guess I have too much respect for the engineering of the original car; I believe it modifying to enhance that engineering, but a V8 isn't doing that.

Call me a purist.

I would love to see a 911 engine mounted in a 2 door fasty. I heard somewhere that the deminsions work out to where it would fit.

Hey you should go with a Audi V8. Did you guys ever see that show TopGear? It's a british show. The guy drove a Audi with a V8 800miles on a tank of gas by driving with everything off and driving lite on the gas but on the highway? That car had the spirit in her since all the gauges showed no miles left and still went another 25 miles! She just didnt want to let him down! That's a VW/Audi! I actually have the same dream as Tuna with the Porsche 6 setup! I wonder though if you could do a twin turbo pancake setup that would be a jump outta your pants car?? I'm sure you can build anything around a motor(like the beetle front v8 setup and the 412 has the trunk) and would be a blast(and parts outta a book) but I like the stock look but packing alot of heat, lololol!! bill

Go talk with the conversion perversion folks over on shoptalk forums. You'll get more folks that will help with your preliminary design questions.

Thanks Bobtail, it's good to know that there is more than just myself that feels this way. The Type 4 engine is really still untapped when it comes to the 411/412 car. I'm still waiting for someone to install a bigger engine, like a 2270 or 2316 into a 411/412. A reasonably tuned engine, mated to the automatic trans, would make for one really nice freeway flyer. That engine would give the car the power it deserves, yet still maintain it's handling and balance.

I saw one years ago on ebay from new york with a set of fury double round headlights and a 318 under the front hood. looked pretty good in the pics. also there is a 412 for sale cheap if anyone is looking for one on my website. and in my other posts found a poorly listed type 3 but I think the price has climbed quickly on that.

A 2270 would be nice! I've got the cars, the space, the desire, the time... Now I just need to free up some money and get some more tools-just hope the economy doesn't go down the crapper too soon...

Oh, and auto trans? Bleh... :P

How about a mid-mounted Passat W8 drivetrain? 8)

a 911 engine is suppossed to directly fit.

Have you priced those suckers lately! A 3.2 Carrera motor would be HOT, though, wouldn't it?

Back in the 60's a buddy had a 283 chev in the back seat of a 55 bug on a tube frame. If i remember correctly he ran it thru a Covair transmission that had to be turned upside down because it ran backward to the V8. One of the Fads of the time was to put tonau (spell?) covers over the backseat of sedans. This hid the fiberglass cover over the engine. This bug blew off a lot of vets and Colorado Blvd drag racers.
