View original topic: Another fake from Romano

This is the latest example of the fake badges he is trying to pass off as real. The OG badge is made from brass and plated in silver and used a mercury based silver paint in the center. The blue enamel is lighter and the silver is duller on the real badge. The repro is about 10% smaller due to the lost wax method of reproduction. The OG badge will show brass on the back and that is why he is not showing you that view. This latest group of repros are chrome on the back and are a obviously incorrect when you know the difference. The real badge will sell for up to $350 in mint condition. How this jerk keeps selling this crap is a mystery to me.

How do you tell if the one you find or are going to bid on is a fake to keep from being "jipped?"
There sure seem to be a lot of fakes being developed!

Hey Bob, Romano asked if you would host his stay at the next Classic. You cool with that?

It takes some study. Like I said, the material is different on this latest variation. VW badges have been repoped since the mid sixty's. I've collected badges since about that time and my father was a collector as well. The real badges have beautiful enamel work and quality plating. Once you have seen, held, and studied them there is no mistaking the fakes. If you ever have a question.....that goes for anyone on this site.....send me pictures, or the badge, and I will be happy to give you an opinion. You can learn a lot from badges and their histories.......it should be a fun hobby, and it would be, if we could weed out the crooks like Romano who make it more difficult for all of us.

Here is a real one. Notice the back is brass not chrome. Also notice the "silver" paint on the front.......it is mercury based and impossible to reproduce today. This is a wonderful example and priced fairly. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=222435
