Hey! Car looks good. Great to hear from you. I will have to post an update on my build thread LOLOL. I remember someone posting a poll up a few years ago with a vote as to who's car would be up and running first. I guess you won.

The tear down has begun. I probably won't decide what color I will paint anything until everything is prepped and ready to shoot. I am going to do the car in sections, beginning with everything in front of the firewall first. I will then move into the interior of the car, and work on the rear section behind the firewall last. The intent is to keep it drivable in between sections of tear down/work. Front end work list goes like this (not necessarily in order):

Maintenance
*add grease fittings to front beam
*replace bent spindle
*rebuild rack & pinion
*remove all rust
*repair rust holes on wheel wells/door hinge area
*paint chassis and body forward of the firewall

Modifications
*shorten braided brake lines
*add 2nd brake light switch to front brake lines
*Combo spindles (budget allowing)
*add 2 more tubes to front chassis (on side angled rearward and up towards the dash on each side)

And here we go again...

How much junk do you have to move to get your baja out of the garage?

I would have gotten more done, like the suspension and beam, but it's my wife's birthday today and I need to take her out to dinner! :o She deserves a good one for letting me play with my toys on her special day! 8)

DustyMojave gave me a tip on some rust removal stuff he used. It's called "The Must For Rust" by KrudKutter. I picked up an 8 oz. bottle at Home Depot today after work for $5.

Well, this stuff does do the trick without much rubbing. The serious areas need two treatments though. I am pleased with the results so far. I have used about half the bottle so far on the front bumper. A die grinder with some Scotchbrite pads will take care of the rest while I clean off weld berries and dress down some ugly welds...

Keep in mind this is removing over two years of rust after welding, with no subsequent treatment after fabrication. I never wiped it down with WD40 or anything. Thanks for the tip, DustyMojave!!

Wow, that's some fantastic results. I might have to pick some up for cleaning up my unpainted roll cage.

Are you going to get the frame powder coated or just hand paint it?
I'm thinking of knocking my car down this winter to chase out all the cracked and such. Keep up the good work.

Skidmark Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:27 pm

Depends on how the budget goes. Right now, it looks like rattle cans...

There's nothing wrong a home job, especially on a car that's going to get wacked around all the time.

powder coating hides cracks... stick to the rattle can my man.. plus its a pain in the ass to fix....
AND it belongs in GLAMIS lol

I decided against going with POR15 for the tube chassis. I will probably use that for the interior floor though. After much mulling it over, I decided to paint the cage blue. I guess I have Richard to blame! I finished taking off the heavy rust on the front bumper that the chemical just couldn't get through (God, I love endless supplies of compressed air!!) at work this morning. I shot some primer on it, and this is how it sits now, drying.

I plan to have a dry finish coat on it before the light disappears this afternoon. I will post up another picture after it turns blue!

Skidmark Sat Oct 31, 2009 3:45 pm

Eventually all of my cage/chassis tubing will end up this color. The bottom line is there are too many other blue highlights on the car not to go with this color. I am planning on leaving the body a dark gray primer.

Skidmark Sat Oct 31, 2009 6:03 pm

Once I could handle it you know I had to set it on the car to see how it looks... 8)

This rust remover I am using is a lot better than sanding, let me tell you! I am pretty impressed with it.

Tomorrow I plan on tearing down the beam, brakes, and suspension. Maybe finish the rust removal on the front chassis tubes as well.

That blue looks good. Nice choice skid. :)

UncleDirty Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:35 am

Looks good Skid. 8)
Are you going to have your front end parts crack checked? Now is the time.
I also noticed you did a little up grade for the wife. Now you can upgrade to combos in the front and coil/bypass in the rear. :D
The upgrade I speak of is to the right of the car

Very observant! After we replaced the washer and dryer, we edned up replumbing the whole house (last July). I had the washer and dryer out to run new water lines to the water heater and kitchen - behind the laundry. Since they were out, it was the right time to add a pedestal. Just don't look to the left of the car... you may be able to find my work bench in there somewhere.
