I am building a Manx styled Dune Buggy. I have removed the body from the chassis and now its time to start the build process. I need to have the chassis of my 1970 bug cut to fit the body. I am no welder, and I really don't know anyone that I trust to such an important task. So I went to Buggy Warehouse and asked them if the could recommend a guy to do the job. Well, they did and here in lies the question. He will replace the pans and remove the 14 inches for $400. All I have to do is supply the Belly pans, take it to him, and pick it back up. He said that he will put it on a JIG (?Spelling?) in order to keep everything straight. I understand that $400. is not a ton of money, but I don't want to get ripped off. Thank you in advance for your help.

Without knowing anything about his actual ability, the price and description of how he plans on doing it sounds good.

Sounds very reasonable to me.

Ask him if the job includes shortening the shift-rod, and the tubes as well.

Sounds reasonable....

IF you're new to bugs... I'd pop him $150 more to do the tranny alignment and brake hookup.

Wasn't there someone in the south selling jigged square tubed chassis like the barrien?

I was told that this guy has done plenty of these, and that he is VERY good! Am I better off buying a pre fab pan?

After having shortened my own car and my neighbors car..I wouldnt do it again for less than $1000...and you cant really shorten it correctly until you have the body your going to use....not every body is exactly 14.5 inches. Mines was 15, my neighbors was 14.

Just my opinion

OK I feel a ton better.....I will take it to him as soon as he calls and says that he has time. Thanks for all the help!! Now on to the next question... (I might ask this in another thread as well...) Has anyone ever lowered the front or back end of a 70 Bug. (Duhh Dumb question!) What I am really asking is do you have photos or instructions? I am sure it is easy, but its always nice to pull from someone ones knowledge.
Thanks,

For lowering...check out the rear suspension thread at the top..do the opposite. Bring the torsions down a couple notches.

For the front you might want to do a searh for narrowed beams etc.
