I was wondering if anyone has info on the following M Codes:

92 xxx xx

9832ED D03 P27 005 227

10 2 7457 UT 2319 61

This comes from a 79 Westfalia 2.0 manual. We are the second owners. The original owner said that they bought it here and picked it up in Europe, traveled around and had it shipped back as part of a VW Sales program. It has the deluxe camping w/ stove & sink, jealousies not tinted.

That's about all I could gather.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm stuck on the D03 / 005 / 227

PS color is Mexico Beige w/ Brown Plaid camping interior.

Thanks, Bob

Hey Bob, I just wanted to add that the UT designation does mean that it was built to US specs for the Tourist Delivery program to be picked up in Europe.

It was written by the guy who compiled the list on the type II site.
Supposedly it has all the M-codes including the ones with the ?? on the type II site.

I want one! I don't get it why I love looking up these old m-codes.... I guess it's like treasure hunting.

It was a great Father's Day present for me this year! I have loved looking through it. I can't say enough good things about it. Very informative and if you like doing this stuff, it is a must!

Your birthday must be coming up soon Dave!

Birthday and father's day have past. :x
I'm taking a trip to Amazon real soon!

I still cannot find this plate in my 77 Westy. I've felt all over the air ducts... everywhere. Nothing. Very frustrating.

Hippy Joe Thu Jul 06, 2006 8:51 am

Mine on my 78 was on the air duct straight up from the clutch. It is hard to see, but you can see the tip of the tag hanging over the air duct. It is face up so you cant just read it. I used a dental mirror and could read it real good that way. Keep looking, once you find it you will kick yourself. I crawled around a bay floor for 30 mins until I found it. Good Luck!

Hello all,

I have 2 questions about my M codes....

Here is my M Code Plate:

72 073 430
246
945134 D04 P27 073 227
51 1 7485 UJ 2319 61

The only codes I have not been able to decipher are:
2nd line: 246
3rd line: D04
4th line: 7485

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Randy in Maine Thu Jul 20, 2006 11:26 pm

#246 is the "Baltic Birch Handmade Westy Interior" and #7485 is the "table mounted outside with optional tiki torches".

Just trying to help. :P

According to Vincent's book:
7485 is a temporary serial no (for production planning)
D04 is a group code for 1977 that includes 002, 012, 067, 102, 206
246 is "Windscreen free from import duty for USA (with M89 only)"

dwill49965 Tue Jul 25, 2006 1:12 pm

Here's my m-code plate. Nothing special - 78 Sage green westy, imported to St Johns, NB (KN). D59 group included 70 amp alt, BA6 heater, and fresh air fans ("ambulance fans") or as the book puts it "2 electric ventilators in the fresh air system".

I found the best way to see it and take a picture: Remove front drivers side turn signal housing. Drill out rivets and remove plastic housing. The plate is slightly to the left and in front of you, over the metal lip and on the horizontal air duct.

Stick hand and digital camera in and rotate - after illuminating area with lighting from inside van near steering column (the flash will overwhelm). Take about 8 or 9 shots with slightly different angles and ranges. One or two are bound to turn out.

If no camera, take paper and pencil, and rub (as numerous others have suggested).

So does anyone know what 002 is? It is not listed on the type2.com page.

EZ Gruv wrote:

002 is "With US-specific sealed beam headlamps, for M027" model type 21,22,23 (LHD)

a second line underneath reads:
"with US-specific carriers for catalysts (only with M524)"

M027 - "plate with emissions value, engine with catalyst" model 21-23(LHD), yrs 75-79, rmks USA-California.

M524 - "USA and Canada specifications"

Try this out:
506 = Brake servo and dual circuit brake warning light
523917 = L282 Lotus White Code for Westy campmobile
C01= ? (probably camper interior)
231 021 = (you have to split the numbers differently, don't ask me why they stamped them the way they did) Kombi, 47 (BHP), manual trans., with M157
m157 = Exhaust control system (And depending on engine number) with activated carbon canister

A 70 Westy, nice plus you got all those other goodies? Sweet.
