Yes, that's correct. XH is for a bus that was ordered in the Tourist delivery program. It was probabaly delivered to 'Schiphol' which is the international airport of Amsterdam. And then picked up by the first owner. 'XH' is not a common code. Most buses were picked up in Germany.

Hi Mildred,

E48 stands for these M-codes (1977 models only):
007 - without tyres
073 - roof opening and reinforcement for Westfalia pop up roof SO 73
161 - seats in cabin with mountings for headrests

Code 007 is a strange one. I wonder how they did this with transportation from factory to distributor. The code probably has something to do with import duties.

Do you have any idea what's the history of this bus? It looks like it was exported to the UK, but you live in New Zealand and the bus is Left Hand Drive...

It is kind of strange that your bus has code H38. The rest of the 1972 US Westies I've seen so far have code 'A02'. Which means almost the same as H38 which is on your bus. The difference is that A02 also includes M102 which stands for rear-window heating (or 'defogger'/'defroster'). So it seems that your bus doesn't have this. Is this right? It would be quite special for an original US-bus.

UA means the bus was shipped to Los Angeles.

Here is a pic of my M-code plate.

As you can see, it has H38 and P38 clearly visible. But now I'm perplexed as mine does have the rear window heater switch near the glove box... Thanks again for your help, Randy

Mr. Molenari, you never got back to me after I posted this pic of my plate. I have since met one more member on here that has the P38 code on his '72 Westy. They may be rare, but they are out there :P. I didn't find out if he had the H38 or A02. Thanks again for all your help, Randy

Hi Randy,

Sorry I never got back to you. I am following this thread every now and then but not continuously, I probably overlooked your message.

You say your bus has the switch for the rear window heating, but it the rear window heating actually there? These are the tiny threads on the window glass. I am curious.

So far this is the only US-bus I saw with H38.

About the P38, do you have pics of the interiour of your bus? Or any original documentation with your bus that indicates what the original owner ordered with is Campmobile? Or type of campmobile?

Yours,
Vincent

Hey I did a M-Code search thing, it was awesome I was way more into it than my wife. It pretty much told me everything that I already knew, but the one thing I have a question about is it has a UT code and according to the info it says that it was picked up by the first owner at the German factory for the US market. Does that mean that it is one of the tourist delivery busses?

Helloe all,
Got myself another "Sopru" camper. One owner bus with all documentation...even dealer receipt for purchase. It cost the guy $10,200 AUD in March 1978. So cool.

Here are the M-Codes.

72 130 214
616
J6J677 A97 085 103 508
14 4 7290 AU 2340 31

I recall the A97 being a group code that included the 085 option.... I wonder why it is listed twice??

Rob J

Mr. Molenari,

The bus didn't have any of the wiring for rear window defrost. I thought that odd. I have a couple of interior pics...

I added the jump seat. It was supposed to have a stool strapped behind the drivers seat. I don't have any documentation, but have met one other P38 owner on this site and his configuration is exactly like mine. Except his bus still had the stool. Thank you for your time, Randy

Well it seems that you have the same codes but placed in different position. I.E. :
2322 100346 seems to be m.y. 1972 plus serial number --> the complete VIN 232 (type 2 model 3 year 1972) - 2 - 100346: 2322100346
03/67/67 seems to be 03 interiors code 6767 upper and lower (therefore 'sigle' paint) paint code but I don't find them in thesamba. In Vincent's book there is 6767 for Brilliant Blue only for 67-70 buses. But this is an African one. 03 Interior uknown
EA seems to be imported in Zaire, Kisangani (Vincent's book)
and so on...but these are not safe for sure!!

any official tech info?

need

Hi
Thanks for the info, any idea how I can identify the original colour other than getting a paint supplier to colour match it? I've been searching South African sites for the codes with no luck so far.
