Buggin_74 Fri Jul 27, 2007 6:18 pm

we didnt get the padded dash on flat screens till late 72 here in australia so all our 68-72 bugs are like that
i took it out of my 74 and always wondered what the holes on the left defroster vent were for.
was mounting the vin there a US only thing?

the other thing thats no real biggy is the speaker grille and glovebox lid on padded dashes are abit smaller than metal ones so thats why theres a larger gap around the edges than early ones

and for the ash tray u could probably use a pre 67 one and just remove the ivory knob

This is absolutely excellent. I've always loved the metal dash bugs, I am gonna rip the dash pad off my 72 super tomorrow while I'm gutting the rest of the interior.

I just mucked about with mine a bit more... looks like a 68 now. :D

Now I just need to peel the dash mat off and get to work to make it an all metal dash. :)

with everyone ripping their dash pads off i figured i'd throw this in here . if anyone has a 68 pad they don't want and it's in decent shape feel free to send it my way , i seem to be the only person that actually likes em .

Wow, it looks great with all the bare metal. Might have to do this cause the last guy used some of that textured paint stuff on the interior which my wife doesn't like.

Where do you guys get those cupholders? Do they just attach to the air knobs?

Thanks

Thanks

It slides in the ashtray slot.

and not everyone likes the look of an unpadded dash, I think that the knobs look like they stick out too far without the pad. Just my opinion, here's mine

Calisupastarz, I like those window cranks. Where'd you get those?

I hate the 74 and up super dashes so bad that I found 65 fire wall/ dash that had been cut out of a totaled car. It is currently being fabed into a dash module that will fit my 74. Odd that I love the rest of the car though……

Here is my 75 standard beetle with bare dash:

Its lame, but i love it

has anybody done this to a SB with the curved windshield?
My dash looks like crap and I think the unpadded ones look much cleaner.

Got pics?

owdlvr Fri Jul 04, 2008 8:22 pm

Check the earlier part of this thread. A curved windshield SB would require cutting a metal dash out of a standard beetle and welding it in.

There are SB photos on page 1 showing the difference.

You can remove the dash pad on new curved windsheild beetles, btu the dash wont look like the old school beetles.

The german look folks do it quite often, search about, I posted a pic somewhere.

I took my pad off yesterday and here's what it looked like. The old pad was cracked pretty badly. I filled in the voids in the grab bar with tape and then used steering wheel wrap(the leather looking stuff) to cover it. I alos filled in the dime sized holes on both ends of the top of the dash with rubbery plastic hood bumpers which look like a nut on the top and a screw in the back. They screwed right into the holes. I used one of these to fill in the hole to the left of the ashtray as well. Now I just need to fabricatr something for the metal ring which goes around the radio o fill in the space and it will look great. Thanks for the idea and the pics guys.[/img]
