Right.need to tighten fan belt, first time on a type 3.....can i do it by removing the top of the cooling tin at the dynamo, of do i have to remove anything else?.....to tighten belt, i remove shims from middle of pully?
cheers

Yes, you remove the belt cover and remove shims from the middle, and put the shims you take out on the outside of the pully. I have always found it easier to just pull the strap, and remove the generator too, and get it out where you can get at it. If you drop any shims or tools, you don't have to go fishing for them.
A T-3 belt does not have to be as tight as a T-1 belt, as it is only spinning the generator, not a fan too.

..ahh right, maybe its ok then!..but seems to be quite slack so maybe worth just taking it up abit

Maybe one shim?? You need a 21mm wrench for the nut, and a 24mm spanner to hold it from turning.

I've searched the forums in pursuit of the actual gen/fan belt for the Type-3, and cannot find it. IIRC, there are 3 different sizes. Two were for the 6v and one for the 12v Generators. The 6v type has two different sizes because of the two different pulley's VW offered. Pedro should post a picture of the two since he is the one who educated me on this issue. Anyhow, it would be advantageous to post the exact sizes of the three different sizes... I think the two 6v ones are 990mm and 1000mm, but I am not certain. Geez, do I miss the "Wolfe-Man"! :?

Thanks Scott... aka "Type-3/34 Yoda"

So what is the 12v one?

I don't know anything about 12 volt cars. I've only ever needed 6.

Gates #7395 9.5mmX1000mm = 3/8"X39.5"

I wrote it in the front cover of my Autopress manual one day, when Russ told us!

Almost ten years since the first post and its title, and no one has pointed out that there is no such thing as a Type 3 fan belt.

Just a generator belt.

Really Phil?!?!?

Walk into a Parts Store and tell them that you want a Generator Belt for a Type-3, but make sure not to give you a "fan" belt. There is a "fan" on the other end of that belt, you know!

here they are :)

Thanks Pedro... Why did they change the size of the fan-pulley midway thru the '63 model year? I can assume that the larger pulley would make the generator spin faster which would probably generate more voltage... charging the battery quicker?

Do you know when the Type-3 starts to demand the same respect as it's Type-1 and 2 older brothers, when you can buy a Generator Belt from Amazon.com 8)

I think that's exactly it. The workshop manual says they changed the ratio to lower the generator rpms. Maybe there had a been a problem with generators overcharging batteries or frying regulators?

Sure, but take the belt off, and the fan still runs!

Belts are named for the accessory they drive, not for what drives it. You don't call the belt a "crankshaft belt" on an upright engine, do you?

That Amazon editor must drive a Type III!

And what "fan" does it run on my Geo? The fan is electric, and the engine is turned sideways. Also, in Toyota's wisdom, they used 3 belts on that engine, rather than a "serpentine" belt. They're just called "fan" belts out of habit.
