Love your bug. Nice job :D

Just finished reading the entire thread and unless I missed it... no mention of "turned beams" to lower the car. I have a beam turned to lower the car 2", drop spindles, and I am in the process of narrowing it 2".

I bought the beam turned and I am doing the rest myself.

Any feedback on turned beams?

re-indexing the torsion bars by the cut and twist is no different than re-indexing by adjusters, except the obivous; you can't adjust it.... I've cut and twisted beams many times over the years to both lower and raise the front of the car...

ok, I have an adjustable front beam (not narrowed). I want to lower the rear without creating a backward rake. If I lower the rear 2 outer splines will I be ok? I basically want the rear nice and low without creating an ugly backward rake.

ignore the photo shopped wheel color.

2 splines in the back will definitaly give it a backward rake. 1 spline should just about level it out

maybe one inner instead of one outer to get a little more of a drop?

one inner from stock will net about 2 inches of drop... one outter will get you about 2 1/4 inches...

according to this http://www.glenn-ring.com/tech/low.html the inner drops it more.

The ACE by me carries alof of metric hardware and in Grade 8.8.

Just to clarify one thing that I noticed here...
Grade 8.8 metric is NOT the same as Grade 8 standard.
For a hardened metric bolt, the grade is 10.9. Grade 8.8 is very close in strength to a standard grade 5 (non-hardened) bolt.

(borrowed from the Rockford Fastener website)

Metric fastener strengths are rated by "Property Class" rather than "Grades." Metric Property Classes are roughly equivalent to SAE Grade as follows:

Property Class=Min Tensile Stregth
Metric
8.8=120,350

10.9=150,800

12.9=176,900

Standard
5=120,000

8=150,000

Head marking for metric fasteners has the Property Class number stamped on the head together with the manufacturer's identification symbol. Metric nuts also have their Property Class number stamped on one of the bearing sides.

Hope this helps...

The stock bolts that come with the car are 8 Standard?

If i buy bolts from the hardware shop I need to look for 10.9 or 12.9 ?

What do you all use?

So I have an adjustable front beam (not narrowed) that is as low as it can go. Right now I am running the ?stock? blue oil filled shocks.. I read that the OPEL GR2 (344098) front shocks are a good replacement and will give better handling seeing they are about 2 inches smaller. Is this a good shock to go with? anybody running them? THANKS!

Correct, less splines on the inner equals more of an increase/decrease.

I plan to low my 70 Beetle 3'' to 4'' where did i weld the avis adjusters, up or down to the center bolt in the beam

wow...never received notice to this thread back then.... thanks for pointing out guys, I did indeed(not sure why) reverse what I was *trying* to say... :lol:

the further down(lower toward the ground) the center grub points, the lower the front end will ride..

olson1955 Thu Oct 01, 2009 7:06 pm

i have a 70 std bug ...

i already got the adjusters in the beam.. and i know how to lower the rear

but what i wanna know is if i can run drop spindles?

i hear alot about only able to run 145 or 135 and thats to small for me.. lol

iam thinking about 165/55 - 165/65 tires..
with my adjustable beam can i put on drop sindles with those tires?

and my beam isnt narrowed..

I am a little confused about shock sizes.
I want to buy KYB GR-2 shocks from pacific customs. They have shocks for a ball joint front end (which is what I have) for a raised, stock, or lowered car. I have 2.5 inch dropped spindles and from what I read on here I would need stock length shocks, and not shocks for lowered cars. Is this correct?

Also, I have have rear lowered 1 spline, so would I use stock length shocks on the back as well or shortened ones?

Correct, dropped spindles don't change the geometry as far as shocks are concerned so stock size are used.

I am using stock size on the rear of my car that has been lowered 2" and have never had any problems. Good luck.

I am looking for some instructions how how to make adjustments to the adjusters. I have a 71 standard with adjusters in the beam already. the car is to low and I need to raise it some. I cant make them move at all, do I need to disconnect any parts before I can adjust them? I have accidently taken the grub screw out of the adjuster and now the hole is lower that the slot in the adjuster so I can not put it back in. Thanks for any help you could provide.

Fattie Sat Oct 17, 2009 7:56 pm

floor jack the front up...put the grub screw back in then adjust it and the other one..then lower the car off the jack....bounce on the front of the car to help it "settle" back down...repeat till you get the height you want

Hey,

I heard that you can lower the front of the car by removing 2 torsion bars,

what ones should i remove.
