| the 3.88 will probably cut your top speed since the taller gears will have a more difficult time turning the larger tires. and your front mounts will be different so if you do intend on using the later transmission you'll have to swap over to the 1969 nose cone. |

| a 3.88 is to tall for any baja running any kind of non stock rear tires, and a 4.12 as high as i would go. my old baja had a 4.12 with a stock 1600 and it was ok for the most part, it left a little bit to be desired on the top end though. that little 1600 just wouldn't pull past 55. |

| sorry, i should have given more info. my baja has an 1835 and 235/75r15. the motor pulls it up to 65 nicely but takes a while to get round 80. im having issues with my baja tranny which is why im considering the swap. so what ur saying is the 74 supers tranny with the 69 nosecone? |

if you do the swap have the R&P switched to, trust me dude a 3.88 is going to be way to high. |

so i drained the transaxle and after 15 min of looken i found this
So i think its the 3/4th shift fork. ITs #34
Is this something I can do myself or do i need a pro to do it? Ive never torn into a tranny or engine but i am pretty good mechanically when it comes to taken things appart n putten them back together |

a friend of mine is an old pro trans builder and he taught me how to build T1 transmissions and had me build my own and its actually not as complicated as people think. the only problem is that there are a couple of specialized tools that you need to get this done. if you don't have them its going to cost as much to buy them as it will to have a transmission builder go through it.
i would let a pro do it. |

| what exactly are these tools, and where do you buy them. i've been wanting to tinker with some of my old busted tranny's just for the heck of it, and try to learn how they work. maybe teach myself how to assemble them and rebuild them. |

you need a good press, various press adapters, a torch, a pinion nut wrench, a gear set adjustment Jig, feeler gauges, and a lash gauge.
*edit
ohh and a few different kinds of cir clip pliers.

so i think ill just buy a new one then. :D more work than i have the time to get into cuz its my daily driver. it would definitly be a good project for later. Thanks for all the awsome advice!
Last question. My lcal vw shop says they can rebuild and install a tranny for me for round $750 and it comes with a 12month warranty. They have been worken on them for years adn are awsome. Is it better to go that route or something like a Rancho for $400 + shipping and do it myself? |

use your local place, if you have been having good luck with it. the hobby needs more business going to the local shops. that's a pretty decent price to. |

So i went to my local vw parts shop and they had a rebuilt irs that they had been sitting on for a while and i picked it up for $475. Some poly mounts and a few other things and i got her back together. While i was hooken the motor up, i managed to hook up my pertronix points backwards and fried em. So sad. But anyway, back on the road rocken and rollen. Thanks for the help everyone.

I got a bugpack Poly Kit, and it doesn't match up to the 3 holes in my tranny for the front mount. Ive been searching for the right mounts but dont see anything that looks like it should fit. The bugpack mount has 2 holes in a angle, that will not line up with any of the 3 holes in my trannie.
As far as i know it should be from a 71 beetle. the motor and trannie were already seperated from the chassis when i bought it.

Yes, very bad idea.
Only 2 spider gears, something will break very quickly.
Very light front end, impossible to turn very good. |

I don't think they make a 3 bolt urethane kit.
You can use a Bugpack # 5059-11 provided your torsion tranny mounting studs point straight back and not down.
You will be solid mounted in the front though........ |
