Sorry I don't have some better photos

whats that odd part on top off the bell housing?

If you are finding chunks of metal on the magnet the it's time to take it out and have it rebuilt. Reguardless of the numbers, it's toast and needs a rebuild.

Shavings are a different story. Right?

how do i tell different years of swing axle bug trannies

surewriting Thu Sep 17, 2009 7:19 pm

I busted up the transmission/axles on my '65 baja bug, but its got a recently rebuilt 1600cc dual-port motor with a brand new starter, and instead of rebuilding the transaxle (and other major problems on the car) Ive got a chance to buy a 1969 baja bug with a non-running motor for $500.

Id like to get the '69, and simply put my motor on it, and eventually put the front end off the '65 on it, but im not sure if the bellhousing mounts are the same for the engine/tranny to hook up, and if theyre not, are there adapter plates or something out there to make the switch work?

Thanks!

You shouldn't have any problems with that swap. The engine mount locations should be identical.

Thank you! Thats a bit of a relief! lol I appreciate it!

69 and 65 are two very different front suspensions.
69 is ball joint, 65 is king pin.
Not interchangeable without some major work.

Thanks for the informative diagram. I figured it would a quite a hassle to do, but with the car being mainly a DD with some light off-road duty until I can really afford to go play in it, I was just going to keep the '69 front suspension stock. Thank you all for your help!

The spacing of the tubes are further apart on a ball joint front.
For most situations you should be fine leaving it as is.
You are welcome......... 8)

I was wondering if it is very difficult to convert a swing axle to IRS?

Anyone know?

So, I completed a search and came up with no answer. I think the answer is "no" but I'm still learning the in's and out's of VW. Can the low gear ratio of my 3 rib bus tranny be swapped out for a higher ratio from a bug? Will the ring, pinion and carrier drop in?

If not, what are my options to a higher ratio? I drive a ton on the road and 45 MPH just isn't cutting it. Thanks in advance!

What is the application?

Short answer, no.
Gear box gear ratios are very similar so a swap wouldn't help you.
However you can install a ring and pinion from the 5-rib 74-75 year bus which is a 4.86 vs. your 5.38 into your 3 rib.
Actually changing the entire transmission to a 5 or even 6 rib would be far easier.
6 rib 76-79 year bus has a 4.57 ring and pinion.

Thank you for the reply! Good info! I'll check out the bus trannys. I have a rail that I drive on road quite a bit back and forth to work. I live in TN and the way to work is a nice meandering country road. At 55 my engine wants to twist out of the frame. I just need a little more top end.

I need to replace my CV joints. I've been asked if I need IRS joints. What exactly is IRS and how can I identify if I have an IRS tranny? It is a 70 beetle, but I don't know the history of it. The suspension is stock. Thanks
