Anyone know of a good place in Sacramento CA to have a transaxle rebuilt?
Edit: Is there a list somewhere of available gear ratios for the T1, 002, and 091 transmissions? |

| I just picked up a beetle. The chassis is a 1970, but the body is a 66. It did not have an engine, but it did have a tranny. I cannot identify the tranny by numbers. Any help would be appreciated. The numbers is A092 4948 |

Question about a trans I just picked up.
I picked up an IRS trans code AA, that I was told had a 4.375 R&P. The code on the side of the trans does indicate via the list of trans codes I've seen allover the internet as a 4.375, BUT? that list also indicates that it would be bolted to a 1200 from chassis No 0 981 810. I'm sure it's IRS due to the fact that it has the input shaft "collar".
So what gives here??? is the motor&chassis number wrong? Or the gearing??? Only thing I am sure of is that it is IRS. |

| Is it worth it to convert my swingaxle bug to another bug IRS tranny or should I get a bus one? I know a guy who has a late bug IRS (from a '69 I think) for about $50 so I might get that.. |

Alright. I'll bring this thread back to life once again because I got a couple questions, and this is the biggest transmission thread on Samba and I'm no transmission expert.
I'm wanting to do a TDI swap in my bus in the near future and am wanting to determine what trans to go with. I got 2 options really, a 002 and 091. Now I will be needing a "freeway flier" 4th gear for sure since the TDI just can't spin as fast as the air cooled will.
So my question is what kind of RPMs would I get if I were at 65 MPH with stock tires in 4th with the "freeway flier"?
How about in the other gears, like what kind of speeds would I get out of it in each gear if the engine were at 3000 RPM in 1st through 3rd in either the 002 or 091?
Basically I'm wanting to find out which trans will work best for me. 002 with "freeway flier" or 091 with "freeway flier". All the talk about R&P ratios just gets me confused.
I know I'll need to swap the bell housing if I get the 091, but I got that covered.
Thanks! |

| I'd go wit the 091, that 4.57 R&P should get you in the ballpark on the freeway, and the TDI has enough torque to get you off the line OK. The 002 3 rib has the 5.38 and you probably won't be able to do over 55 on the freeway. I have friends with stock 002's in their bugs and at 55 they are spinning in the 4k rpm range. My trans has a 4.56 R&P and at 65 I am at 3500. Keep in mind that that is with 31 inch tires. |

| TDi redlines about 4.7k, and power starts to drop off about 4.2k, for those that aren't familiar with the TDi |

| What kind of RPMs are I looking at with the 091? Still what about the freeway flier gear? |

Go here:
http://www.wallaceracing.com/calcmph.php
An 091 has a 4:571 ring and pinion and .89 4th gear.
You need to plug in those constants along with your tire size and rpm to get speed.
Example, those constants with a 26" tire and 3K RPM is 57.08 MPH.
Keep changing RPM numbers to get different speed results. |

| Be careful you do not get your engine RPM too low. Remember, you need the cooling fan spinning to get the proper cooling. VW basically designed the engine to be running 3500 rpm at highway speeds. |

Don't gotta worry about that with a TDI in it. As it is right now with the 1800 T4 and 002, it can barely get out of its own way. Hightop really slows it down. |

I used to drive a 1600 diesel Vanagon back in 1985. I know what you mean.
You row it down the road with the gear shift lever. |

 I like that analogy. The Safare' isn't that bad though. Only need 3rd for climbing big hills. A 1.6 NA diesel in a Vanagon would be even worse. Thankfully the TDI is many many times more powerful. :D (I love that engine)
Still looking for opinions on the freeway flier gear though. It seems a 091 is the way to go, but in 4th on the highway would still make my engine run too fast. |

Here's the stock ratio's from an '04-'05 TDi (02J EUH trans code)
R&P: 61/18 (3.889)
1st: 34/9 (3.778)
2nd: 33/16 (2.063)
3rd: 31/23 (1.348)
4th: 29/30 (0.967)
5th: 29/39 (0.744)
So figure weight of 3200lbs
tire size 195/65 15

Hi all I am a new samba member as of today. Been searching and searching and i cant find a break down of the tranny identification numbers any place. I have seen mention of stickys and followed external links with no luck. So can somebody please help me identify this tranny.
the raised numbers on the tranny are a 10 and below that is 113.301.103 and below that the VW logo
the indented numbers are 3301157
This was in a dune buggy i recently purchased and i am trying to track down the years of every thing. As it turned out the power plant was a 1958 356 Porche motor that I just sold. I Have been shopping around for a turnkey motor and have been entertaining the idea of the 2200cc volkstroker by scat. but now am concerned that the tranny cant handle it. so i figured i better identify the tranny and ask for some recommendations.
thanks in advance
